Network Discovery (ND) Problem of SRHO Characteristic of SRHO Not free to use the target radio when the source radio is operating The source radio is the only reliable means to transmit/receive Network Discovery Problem Difficult to find the available networks for a multiple radio wireless device to use (1) before knowing which radio to use (2) when the radio is deactivated, or (3) when it is desirable to avoid blind scan by the radio Causes time and energy consuming problem 21-12-0010-02-srho3

ND using Location Information Network discovery using global positioning system (GPS) Advantage Enhance network discovery without using target radio Disadvantages Power consumption of GPS interface Weak GPS performance in indoor environment Network load of cooperation with information repository (IR) is necessary –The multi-radio MN should update their location every some seconds or some minutes 21-12-0010-02-srho4

ND with User’s Schedule Information Multi-radio MN user usually manages their schedule through the schedule program such as Google calendar Scheduled time information is usually associated with location information Supports location information without GPS interface Mr. Sam’s Today Schedule 9:00~12:00 : Work at the office 12:00~13:00 : Eat lunch at the cafeteria 13:00~16:00 : Work at the office, again 16:00~18:00 : Discussion with team member at Conference Room A 18:00~ : Come back home Figure 1. Example of Schedule Program 21-12-0010-02-srho5

Enhancement 1 for the ND: including network access information The scheduled information may include network access information Network access information: network type (E.g. WLAN, WiMAX, UMTS, LTE, etc.), center frequency, security information, etc. Mr. Sam’s’s Today Schedule 9:00~12:00 : Work at the office Network: WLAN BSSID : office_no_1 Password: 12345 12:00~13:00 : Eat lunch at the cafeteria Network: WiMAX Password: outdoor 13:00~16:00 : Work at the office, again Network: WLAN BSSID : office_no_1 Password: 12345 16:00~18:00 : Discussion with team member at Conference Room A Network WLAN SSID: conference_room_a Password: 54321 18:00~ : Come back home Network: UMTS Figure 2. Example of ND using network access information 21-12-0010-02-srho6

Enhancement 2 for the ND: Cooperating with Information Repository (IR) The network discovery is then achieved through use of the IR combined with schedule of time and location from the MN, which may or may not have GPS information. Figure 3. Example of ND using Information Repository 21-12-0010-02-srho7

Enhancement 3 for the ND: Using Records of User’s Network Access Records of user’s network access can enhance network discovery with or without the information repository Mr. Sam’s’s Today Schedule 9:00~12:00 : Work at the office Network Access History: The multi-radio MN connected to the WLAN whose SSID is office_no_1 with password “12345” 12:00~13:00 : Eat lunch at the cafeteria Network: Access History: The multi-radio MN connected to the WiMAX network with password “outdoor” 13:00~16:00 : Work at the office, again The multi-radio MN may connect to the WLAN whose SSID is office_no_1 with password “12345” Deduction is possible Figure 3. Example of ND using records of user’s network access 21-12-0010-02-srho8

Conclusions The multi-radio MN can enhance handover performance and reduce power consumption Reduce handover delay because of avoiding the blind scanning Reducing power consumption without using the GPS interface The network architecture can be simple or the network performance can be enhanced Can reduce network load using IR Can cover indoor network access 21-12-0010-02-srho9
