Lesson 9 – Third Grade Clay Coil Pots Art@Booksin

Today’s Lesson Today is a ceramic art lesson you are going to create your own clay coil pot. In part 2, you will paint your coil pot. Skill Development: Art@Booksin An opportunity to use a new material clay, build texture and create a three-dimensional form. To build upon the different methods of molding clay, in this case creating coils and form sculpting using scoring as a joining technique. Clay coil pots

Forming (i.e. shaping) Firing (baking in a kiln) Glazing/decorating (coating the object with a glaze, or applying to it various decorative techniques) Refiring (rebaking) to harden the glaze. What is Ceramic Art? Known as an important art ‘ceramics’ (derived from Keramos, Greek for potters clay) refers to items made from clay bodies and fired in a kiln (or oven) to obtain the finished art form. It requires a 4 step creative process of: Art@Booksin Clay coil pots Art@Booksin

Pottery is our oldest handicraft. Fired clay is one of the few materials on earth that does not change with time, and clay has always been an abundant resource. Art@Booksin Why is clay so important? Clay coil pots The earliest function of clay was to line baskets as a way to waterproof them. Baskets were often used to carry water to crops, and the clay lining prevented leakage.

History of Clay Pot Making Because these early pinch pots could only carry small amounts of water and food, the next stage in the history of pot making was coil pots. People began to make their pinch pots bigger by adding on coils of clay to the rims of the pots. Art@Booksin Clay coil pots Chinese Pottery

Greek Red-Figure Style Pottery. Coiling is the process of snaking a length of clay in circles one on top of the other until you build the wall of the pot. Greek potters produced a wide range of ancient pottery in all shapes and sizes. They decorated it with abstract, historical and mythological designs. Art@Booksin Clay coil pots

What happened since last lesson: The clay pots were left to completely dry before firing. If it is not dry it will crack when fired They were then Fired in the Kiln so the clay will not soften up with water. Today we are going to paint our clay coil pots! Use your imagination, maybe paint in a complementary color to your bedroom? Process (Part two): Art@Booksin Clay coil pots
