3. What is an Emerging Disease? -Example? Epidemic- an unusually high occurrence of a disease in a certain place during a certain time period. Pandemic- when a epidemic affects many areas of the world.

5. Why do Diseases Emerge? -reminder that the human immune system is in a never-ending battle with pathogens. Diseases can emerge: -when humans come into contact with infected animals -pathogens become resistant to existing medications -people lack appropriate immunizations They spread quickly due to more international travel and a global food supply.

6. Contact with Infected Animals: -Avian Flu- caused by a virus that infects certain birds. -Ebola- virus carried by bats and primates, disease passed between people.
