Life cycle of a Butterfly Katelyn Baird

Stage One Tiny eggs are laid by the female on a leaf. Female lays between 200-1500 eggs. Most eggs wont survive because they are food for a lot of insects. Around 5 days later, a tiny wormlike creature will hatch.

Stage Two The caterpillar is the primary eating and growth stage of the insect. Also known as the larva stage. Will grow to about two inches. Sheds skin 5-6 times After several weeks it will start to look for a place to become a butterfly.

Stage Three The pupa or chrysalis is the resting or transformation stage, and within it the marvelous transformation from caterpillar to adult takes place. Can last from weeks to up to two years depending on the type of Butterfly.

Stage Four The adult emerges from the chrysalis. Butterflies only goal is reproducing. The usual lifetime is only two weeks.

Butterflies A butterfly or moth is emerging now. The pupa skin splits, the limp, damp butterfly crawls out-now with compound eyes, a proboscis for feeding and six legs. The wings are expanded and blood is pumping into them. A little warming from the sun and it is now ready to fly off to feed and then lay its eggs.
