2 IMS is an Applications-Centric Concept The ability to deliver person-to-person, real-time, IP based multimedia communications (e.g. voice). The ability to fully integrate real-time with non real-time multimedia and person-to-machine communications. The ability for different services and applications to interact, and The ability for the user for very easily set-up multiple services in a single session or multiple simultaneous synchronized sessions. (UMTS Forum definition of IMS)

3 IP multimedia services The four key changes Richer person-to-person communication –IP will increase usage through reachability of users, seamless usage of different communication types and easy-to-use group communications. Richer interaction between media streams –Easy integration and interworking of different IP-based services. Service mobility –Consistent services over various different access networks increase usage and reduce churn. Easier service creation and integration –Well defined open APIs and programming languages enable service creation by 3rd party developers.

5 The IMS Solution – Resources Shared Across Multiple Services

7 Push-to-Talk over cellular (PoC) Other key PoC features include: group calls are possible as well as one-to-one calls like internet instant messaging models, presence information is normally associated with PoC services, PoC voice offerings are typically priced below normal mobile phone calls call hold times are typically much shorter the ‘always-on’ nature of data networks makes for near instant call set-up times that mean PoC services are very easy to use. PoC provides users with a distinctly different user experience to traditional voice, delivering a ‘walkie-talkie’ style service.

Video Share Video Share is essentially one-way live video streaming that lets users share live video streams or video recordings while on a mobile call. Basically, a Video Share session comprises the following steps: –Circuit-switched call setup –Capability query –Invitation procedure (SIP) –Video transmission (RTP) –Teardown of video session –Teardown of circuit-switched call Video Share is the first real IMS client application to be deployed by operators around the world for commercial use, mainly because it does not require servers in the network besides IP access and network registration.

Rich Communication Suite The Rich Communication Suite Initiative is an effort of a group of operators, network and terminal vendors to launch a set of interoperable services based on IMS Operators: Orange, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, TeliaSonera, AT&T, NTT DoCoMo, Telenor, Telstra, SFR, SK Telecom Vendors: Nokia, Nokia Siemens Networks, Samsung Sony-Ericsson, Ericsson, Alcatel-Lucent, Motorola, LG Main features of Rich Communication Suite Phase 1: –Rich Call: calls enhanced with media sharing –Enhanced phone book, contacts enhanced with capabilities and rich presence, –Enhanced messaging, conversational messaging experience. Plan is to have RCS devices in the shops in 2009

13 Video Sharing is a multimedia service that allows people to view a live video or a video clip in real time during a normal voice call on their mobile phone. Sent from one phone to the other, both speakers can see the same video and discuss it, and then end the Video Sharing without ending the voice call. Nokia Video Sharing - Turbo Call

16 HSDPA HSDPA is a packet based data service in W-CDMA downlink with data transmission up to 8-10 Mbps over 5MHz bandwidth in W-CDMA downlink. This improved performance is based on: –Adaptive modulation and coding –A fast scheduling function, which is controlled in the base station (Node-B) rather that by the RNC. –Fast retransmission

מחלקת הדרכה ופיתוח ארגוני 25 Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS) The MBMS is a unidirectional point-to-multipoint service. Transmitting the same data to multiple recipients allows network resources (wireless and wireline) to be shared. MBMS is provided over a broadcast or multicast service area which can cover the whole network or be a small geographical area such as a shopping mall or sports stadium allowing for region specific content distribution. Examples of broadcast services are advertisements for upcoming or ongoing Multicast services or localized advertisements such as ads for attractions or shops within the broadcast area.

26 MBMS Service Modes Broadcast mode Delivers MBMS data to all interested users within a requested service area and with a requested QoS Doesn’t care whether users are within the service area or not Multicast mode Delivers MBMS data to all interested users within a requested service area and with a requested QoS Interested user have to register with the MBMS service to receive data and will be authenticated based on a subscription Radio resources are used only in cells with registered users Users can be charged for the MBMS services using different tariff models Unauthorized reception is prevented
