2 Water Analyses Tests and Results During the two years of the Comenius project we made water analysis during the chemistry lesson in order to get results about the cleanliness and purity of the water of our rivers.(Aliakmon,Tripotamos, Canal66) We analyzed the following: The pH value of the water which is something very important. The ideal pH value is about 7. pH is influenced by temperature, rocks, human activities. The regulations of EC for drinking water say that pH of water should range from 6,5-8,5. Nitrate salts. They mainly come from pollution of agricultural crops. Large quantities of them cause eutrophication of water and diseases. Nitrite salts. They come from sewage, fertilizers, industrial waste and are toxic to people. Phosphate salts. They come from detergents, industrial waste and cause eutrophication of water. Ammonium salts. They come from fertilizers, litter and residential sewage pipes. They cause water pollution.

3 : A portable Water Testing Kit was used for the water analyses and the results are shown in the table below:

4 Interpreting the water analyses tests we conclude that the substances of the water of our rivers ranges between the limits set by EU. This means that it is safe and not polluted so it can be used for drinking or for watering the fields. Nevertheless, we have noticed that, in both water tests, pH value of Tripotamos river water, that flows through our city, is a bit higher due to detergents from residential use thrown into it. The conclusion drawn, after the water analyses, is that the fact that our rivers waters are clean and safe for use does not mean that we do not have to protect the environment. We, people, have the obligation to preserve it for the next generations, by not polluting water though chemical wastes from factories and sewage, not using harmful chemical products for domestic use. 5 How we can help protect the environment and its future : Don’t drop litter Birds and animals can mistake litter for food. Litter can end up in rivers and block drains, or in the sea and be eaten by fish. Also, some litter will stay around for thousands of years! Pleasing products Many household cleaning products contain harmful chemicals which are washed down the drain. Encourage your parents to buy eco-friendly products or even make your own from natural substances like vinegar and lemon juice. Detectives If you spot pollution, such as oil on the beach, report it to the local council. If you suspect a stream is polluted, report it to the Environment Agency.
