2 The Family Is the first environment in which people are socialized Families are the primary role models for children Family background determines the opportunities available to children and in turn the paths that may be available to them Children also acquire the status of their family

3 School Allows children to separate from their families and to develop independence The school’s curriculum, teachers, and peers all have a role in the socialization of children Children acquire knowledge and develop skills necessary for becoming an adult

4 Part Time Employment What motivates you to work part time? Work is both a way to earn an income and a major contributor to self esteem. Families, school, community and society all have an impact on choice of career. Part time work allows teenagers to take on responsibility roles in the community. Money is the biggest motivator for part time work

5 Part time employment continued… It has been reported that part time work has little effect on young people’s work values. It does have a stronger impact on girls’ values than boys’. If teens have a job where they are given responsibility, work with others, and manage their time, the intrinsic value of work becomes more important.

6 Attitudes Values and Beliefs Families transmit the basic values and attitudes that determine the liklihood of success in adulthood. Parents level of education, income and employment history have an impact on a child’s income as an adult – Based on previous class discussions, why do you think this is so?

7 Attitudes values and beliefs continued… To find work rewarding a persons abilities must be challenged. It is through their families that young people learn to challenge themselves and to develop self reliance and responsibility.
