Secondary Display Unit Team Members Cara Dunn, Farshad Fahimi, Tyler Witt, Nipun Yamdagni Advisor Willis Tompkins, Ph.D. Client Michael K. Abernethy, MD, FACEP

Overview Problem Statement Background Information Summary of Product Design Specs. –Output Information –Visualization Design Alternatives Future Work

Problem Statement Output information from an in-flight Propaq Monitor (EKG, pulse oximetry, BP) must be reproduced on a readily accessible secondary screen for Dr. Abernethy and his crew to see. Acceptable reproduction methods include a small video screen such as those found in vehicle entertainment centers, or in the form of a wearable CRT. This latter approach projects an image in the user’s peripheral vision.

UW Med-Flight Team Use Propaq encore 206-EL to monitor the patient while in the helicopter to monitor –EKG –Blood Pressure –Heart Rate –Electrical Activity of the Heart Portable to move with the patient

Motivation Current Propaq monitor is too bulky Could become a projectile if helicopter moves suddenly Propaq must be placed on the ground, but need to have the display at eye level Client prefers a smaller display to place on his kneeboard or other convenient location

Other Comparable Devices Patents: –5,751,341 –6,558,321 –6,633,658 Each of these devices unscrambles, reconstructs or reproduces images on a secondary screen

Network Acuity Port + Vidco Use Network Acuity port to connect Propaq to Vidco box Vidco box will output to DV-15 port (standard monitor plug) Custom helicopter integration

Pros and Cons Pros: Pre-existing converter Can focus on display’s ergonomics Cons: Very expensive (~$3500) Excessive –Connects up to 16 Propaqs Adds additional equipment Current Propaq lacks network acuity port

Output Data and Interpretation Find a way to output data from the Propaq Interface the Propaq with a PDA Create software to interpret and display the outputted data

Pros and Cons Pros: Display will be customizable –Ensure ease of use Small Fairly inexpensive Cons: Method of implementation is unknown Requires computer programming with GUI Possible lag between the Propaq screen and the PDA screen

Splicing Identify the wires that go to the display Splice each into two output routes Use new connection to connect to the secondary display

Pros and Cons Pros: Secondary display will look identical to the Propaq’s original display Inexpensive –Display is the only expense Cons: Tedious Some may be skeptical about the reliability of the altered Propaq Unknown cable format in Propaq

Design Matrix

Eyetop Sunglasses Wire connects glasses to control unit which receives video input (Upper Right) Embedded screen projects image in user’s peripheral vision (Lower Right) Audio and video capabilities

Fashion Eyewear Variety of styles

LCD Monitor For use with standard video input Flip-down monitor would attach to helicopter ceiling Possible to attach to rotating wall mount for multiple viewing angles Rotating wall mount bracket Typical LCD screen in flip-down position

PDA Monitor PDA functions by converting serial data & reproducing video image Small, handheld device could be attached to Flight Physician’s kneeboard, or even worn on wrist for easy access to video screen Software required for data conversion unavailable Wristwatch PDA controlled by voice recognition
