2 Technology is the products and processes designed to serve our needs

3 The words science and technology can and often are used interchangeably. But the goal of science is the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake while the goal of technology is to create products that solve problems and improve human life. Simply put, technology is the practical application of science.wordsgoal

4 TECHNOLOGY IS A PART OF SCIENCE BUT HOW IS IT DIFFERENT? Technology Technology is doing The search for and theorizing about new processes. 9 WHAT IS ENGINEERING AND HOW DOES IT RELATE TO TECHNOLOGY? Engineering is the process of creating technology. Professional engineers, scientists, inventors, business owners, artists and even students have engineered new technologies. How you ask???? Anyone can follow the engineering design process to solve a problem or address a need.

10 WHAT IS THE ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS?

11 Let’s look at each step of the Engineering Design process. ASK Identify the problem or need. Research the need or problem. Examine the current state of the issue. An example: Air pollution is a big problem. How can we cut down on this? Design an automobile that uses a non polluting energy source.

12 Imagine Develop possible solutions. Brainstorm possible solutions. ( A group of people share ideas quickly to promote additional ideas). Sometimes one product may spark an idea for another product. Use math and science. Select the best possible solution. Determine which solution best meets the original needs.

13 Design The prototype may be a physical model or a computer model. This allows engineers to see if their design works.

14 Create Make a prototype. Test and evaluate the solution. Do the prototype do the job it was designed to do? Engineers make sure that the cost of designing and producing the new product is worth its benefit. This is called cost benefit analysis. Is it safe, reliable and durable?

15 Improve Modify and retest the solution if necessary. If it did not work well engineers would modify their prototype or try a new solution.

16 Communicate Communicate your results to other engineers and customers of the product.

21 Benefits and Consequences Unintended consequences of new technology: Uses or results that engineers do not purposely include in the design of products. Unintended consequences can be beneficial. An example would be roadside restaurants, gas stations etc., that provide jobs and conveniences for travelers. Unintended consequences can be harmful. An example is air pollution caused by the burning of gasoline that powers our modes of transportation.

24 INTENDED BENEFITS Intended benefits are the positive purpose for which a technology is designed to be used. An example is the automobile that provides a convenient way to travel. Another example is the internet which allows access to information at our fingertips.

28 THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF BIOENGINEERING Assistive Engineering that results in a product or process that helps living organisms but does not change them permanently. Adaptive Engineering that results in a product or process that changes living organisms.

29 ADAPTIVE OR ASSISTIVE???? On page in your journal make 2 columns labeled Adaptive and Assistive Write the name of the item you see underneath the type of bioengineering you think it is. Remember: Assist = Help Adapt = Change
