In the first six months the Japanese conquered Hong Kong, French Indochina, Malaya, Burma, Thailand, much of China, Dutch East Indies, Guam, Wake Island, the Solomon Islands, and countless other outposts in the ocean.

The Fall of the Philippines (1941-1942) 80,000 Americans and Filipinos troops battled the Japanese for control Douglas MacArthur in charge Troops retreated to Bataan Peninsula and held out for four months Roosevelt ordered MacArthur to escape to Australia MacArthur proclaimed, “I Shall Return.”

Battle of Coral Sea (May 1942) 1 st naval battle fought entirely by aircraft, enemy ships never saw each other The battle was a draw militarily American and Australian troops did stop Japanese forces from invading Australia

Battle of Midway (June 4, 1942) Entirely fought in the air Americans took out four Japanese aircraft carriers, a cruiser, and 250 airplanes Turning point in Pacific war Allies soon started island hopping and Japan couldn’t take the offensive again

Battle of Guadalcanal (August 1942) US troops invaded and 2,200 Japanese fled into the jungle 1st taste of jungle warfare with little contact with the enemy This marked Japans first defeat on land

Island Hopping –Battle of Leyte (The Philippines) October 1944 MacArthur proclaimed, “I Have Returned” Disaster for Japan lost three battleships, four aircraft carriers, thirteen cruisers, and around five hundred planes The Japanese used Kamikaze pilots to destroy targets heavily armed with bombs The strategy to win by capturing a few strategic Japanese Islands and isolating the rest

Battle of Iwo Jima (Nov 1944-Feb 1945) Known as sulfur island Bloodiest battle of the war US encountered furious resistance 20,700 Japanese troops entrenched in tunnels and caves US forces suffered 25,000 casualties Only 200 Japanese survived

Battle for Okinawa Last obstacle before the invasion of Japan Second biggest invasion of the war Japanese unleashed 1,900 kamikaze attacks on Allies, sinking thirty ships and damaging three hundred more 110,000 Japanese died defending Okinawa Costliest battle of the Pacific war
