Human Rights Speech Given by: Eleanor Roosevelt

What are our Human Rights?  Human Rights are rights inherent to all human beings, of any nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, language, sexual preference or any other status. We are all equally entitled to our human rights without discrimination. These rights are all interrelated, interdependent, and invisible.

Human Rights are…  Universal and inalienable  Interdependent and indivisible  Equal and non-discriminatory  Both rights and obligations

Basic Human Rights  Freedom of speech and a free press  Freedom of religion and worship  Freedom of assembly and the right of petition  The right of men to be secure in their homes and free from unreasonable search and seizure and from arbitrary arrest and punishment.

On September 28 th, 1948, Eleanor Roosevelt addresses our people with a speech about Human Rights. She opened her speech with a few very powerful sentences. Her tone was strong and she was addressing the speech to every human being alive and yet to be born. The Declaration of Universal Human Rights was then passed on December 10 th, 1948 in Paris.

Eleanor Roosevelt The Struggle for Human Rights  “I have come to you this evening to talk with you on one of the greatest issues of our time – that is the preservation of human freedom”  “It was here the Declaration of the Rights of Man was proclaimed, and the greatest slogans of the French Revolution – liberty, equality, fraternity – fired the imagination of men.”  “I have chosen to discuss it in the early days of the General Assembly because the issue of human liberty is decisive for the settlement of outstanding political differences and for the future of the United Nations”

Universal Human Rights  Expressed or guaranteed by law  Come in the forms of treaties  Are customary to international laws  International human rights law lays down the obligations of Governments to act in certain ways or to refrain from certain acts, in order to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms of individuals and groups.

My stand point…  I feel that if this speech were never given, I would not be sitting here today doing this assignment. I have the freedom to chose my own education and career. The Declaration of Human Rights has shaped our nation the way it is today. We are all born equal and should given the same chances no matter where we were born, what color our skin is, what our ethnic background is, or what language we speak. We are all human beings!

Over all…  I felt her passion for the subject when she began the speech.  She used and assertive and persuasive tone.  The audience she addressed included all human beings.  She has a great concern for preservation and promotion of human rights.
