The appearance of Daoism Three major religions or philosophies shaped many of the ideas and history of Ancient China. They are called the three ways and include Daoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism. Confucius and his students were not the only scholars affected by the chaos in China during the Zhou dynasty. Another group of thinkers saw the disorder and responded differently. Their reaction led to the development of Daoism.

Daoism Daoism-is an ancient Chinese way of life that emphasizes a simple and natural existence. Daoism was founded during the Zhou Dynasty in the 6th century by Lao-Tzu. Daoism is China’s oldest religion. At one time, the land called China was the home of numerous peoples with different racial origins. All these ethnic groups probably had their own special gods and religious beliefs. One common theme was a belief in life after death as can be seen in ancient tombs all over China.

Features of Daoism religion Among the prominent features of Taoism religion are belief in physical immortality, alchemy, breath control and hygiene a pantheon of deities (including Lao - tzu as one of the three Supreme Ones), monasticism and the ritual of community renewal.

Beliefs of Daoism Taoism believes that people should be one with nature and that all living things have an universal force flowing through them. Taoists didn't believe in a lot of rules or government, because this makes people act the same way all the time. In this way they were very different from the followers of Confucius. Daoists were not concerned with the morals, rituals, and learning that the Confucians valued. The opener of this religion thought, that people should make their own decisions in each situation.

Differences between Confucionism and Daoism ljhifgjkfbkklijloCv Confucionism 1)They thought that education is the only way to enlightenment and self- development 2)The name of religion came from its opener-Confucius 3) Followers of Confucionism were not sure, that there is a new life after death. Actually Confucius said this words:”How can we know what is death, when we even do not know what is life?” http://www.bogoslov.ru/text/18 75775.html http://www.bogoslov.ru/text/18 75775.html Confucionism 1)They thought that education is the only way to enlightenment and self- development 2)The name of religion came from its opener-Confucius 3) Followers of Confucionism were not sure, that there is a new life after death. They freely used ideas from both.

Similarities: 1) Only one person discovered each religion. 2)Were affected during Zhou dynasty 3)Followers of each religion did not believe in any Gods, they just worshiped to the discoverer of their religion.

Yin and Yang Lao Tsu also thought that everything alive in the universe shared in a universal life-force. There were two sides to the life-force, which are called the yin and the yang. This picture is often used to show how the yin and the yang are intertwined with each other. These forces can be thought of as dark and light, cold and hot, male and female. These opposing forces are always equal and balanced.

Immortality Chinese people generally didn’t want to die. They wanted to live a long time. So ancient Chinese developed different methods to keep living. Some Daoists humans who are hundreds or thousands years old involved themselves in their lives and some Daoists worship these immortals. Some immortals once died but came back to existence in another way. There are both internal and external methods of prolonging life.

Ways to become immortal External External ways involve drugs made of minerals or elements like mercury or herbal medicines. Internal Internal ways involve controlling and moving around the Chi or meditation and inaction.

The influence of Daoism on Chinese culture Taoism has been one of the most influential philosophies and religions during the past 2,500 years in China, and it affects every aspect of Chinese life, including leisure. These influences can be seen in Chinese people's close connection to the natural world, the concepts of holistic wellness and health care, the practice of martial arts, traditional arts such as painting and poetry, enjoyment of cultural activities and celebrations, and tourism.
