1 The Body’s Transport System
Ch.10 S. 1 The Body’s Transport System

2 Key Concepts What are the functions of the cardiovascular system?
What is the function and structure of the heart? What path does blood take through the cardiovascular system?

3 The cardiovascular system
Also called the circulatory system Made up of heart, blood vessels, and blood

4 The Cardio system Delivers needed materials
Example:oxygen from lungs to other parts of body Removes waste products Ex.: CO2 back to lungs after cells produce it as waste Fights disease Ex. White blood cells fight disease

5 The heart How big is your heart? What protects the heart?
Answer these in your notes. Write the questions! How big is your heart? What protects the heart? Describe the heart’s structure.

6 Arteries carry blood away from the heart.
From arteries, blood flows into tiny blood vessels called capillaries. Here, substances are exchanged between blood and other body cells.

7 Pattern of blood flow Blood flows thru body in a pattern similar to a figure 8. In the first loop, blood flows from heart to lungs, then back to heart. In the second loop, blood goes from heart thru rest of body and back to heart. The heart is really 2 pumps, one on the right and one on the left. Right-pumps to lungs. Left-pumps to body.

8 Blood travels in only 1 direction.
Whole trip takes less than a minute.

9 To the lungs and back Blood in right atrium-little O2 because it’s coming from body. Lots of CO2 Dark red, flows from R.atrium into R. ventricle Ventricle pumps blood into arteries that lead to lungs

10 To the lungs and back In the lungs, oxygen is tranferred to blood, carbon dioxide is tranferred to lungs Oxygen rich blood, now bright red, flows to the left side of the heart and will begin the second loop

11 Loop 2 : To the body and back
2nd loop begins in left atrium with O2 rich blood Moves to left ventricle which will push blood into the aorta, the largest artery in the body Blood moves into capillaries all over the body and exchanges it’s oxygen with other cells wastes. This blood, low in oxygen, travels back to the right atrium to start all over.

12 Create a VENN diagram that compares the blood leaving the right ventricle with blood leaving the left ventricle.
