Background South of Scotland Broadband - strategic partnership between partners shown below Sept 2011 - SoS submitted Local Broadband Plan (LBP) to the Scot Govt Mar 2012 – Scot Govt launched National Infrastructure Plan – SoS LBP became part of this Aug 2012 - Scot Govt Step Change 2015 Programme agrees to deliver to 75% coverage of each Local Authority Area Oct / Dec 2012 – SoS Project Team receive approval from DGC and SBC for additional funding to aim to increase this coverage to approx 80-85%

SoS Broadband Project Team SoS Broadband Project Team received funding approval from SBC & DGC to target increased coverage from 75% to an ambition of 85% coverage BT have already commercially supplied FTTC to Galashiels, Peebles, Innerleithen and Dumfries, with Stranraer and Kelso planned during 2013 On completion of Procurement process, supplier will undertake detailed survey works to identify rollout plan and phases SoS Project Team will then work with communities expected to lie within the final 15% to identify alternative funding solutions to deliver Infrastructure in parallel to National rollout

Demand Registration SoS Demand Registration website includes survey to register demand – currently 4,347 respondents (as dated 3 June 2013) Four Streams –Businesses – 1,002 registered –Public Sector – 53 registered –Individuals / Residents – 3,077 registered –Community groups – 215 registered This only represents 5.16% of all premises in South of Scotland registered (excluding those settlements already upgraded) The communities with the highest levels of registrants are the communities where individuals who live within the community have acted as a ‘community champion’ and knocked on doors to encourage people to register

Demand Stimulation and Registration is critical to success SoS Broadband Project Team working with existing community and business advisers to encourage all to register and stimulate the demand Results of these surveys are fed directly into Scot Govt as part of the Procurement Process and Supplier Negotiations Suppliers look for large levels of demand to get a return on their investment Areas with the highest demand demonstrated will be more attractive to the suppliers in terms of timescales

9. FAQs Why should I register demand … … if I’m in the 85%? Once the Procurement Process is completed, the Supplier will then develop a Rollout Plan, complete with phases – the level of demand may influence the supplier to come to your settlement sooner if high levels of demand have been demonstrated. … if I’m in the final 15%? If your settlement lies within the final 15%, then the community will have to work with the South of Scotland Broadband Project Team and CBS to find a suitable solution that can feed back into the National Infrastructure that is being rolled out. This will involve negotiations with suppliers to deliver a solution to your community. If high levels of demand can be demonstrated within that community, the supplier may contribute to the project costs, as they would see a potential return on their investment from the high levels of demand.

For education purposes; streaming TV, music, interactive gaming; Tele-care / Tele-health initiatives; Skype or other VOIP products; multi-device access … as a Business? To send and receive data within e-mails quicker; download files faster; virtual working; tele-working; Video and data conferencing … as a Community Group? Better access to public services; support for community life; allows people to become more active within their community; quick access to update websites to keep local members informed of community meetings, papers, etc.
