Credit(s) earned on completion of this course will be reported to AIA CES for AIA members. Certificates of Completion for both AIA members and non-AIA members are available upon request. This course is registered with AIA CES for continuing professional education. As such, it does not include content that may be deemed or construed to be an approval or endorsement by the AIA of any material of construction or any method or manner of handling, using, distributing, or dealing in any material or product. ___________________________________________ Questions related to specific materials, methods, and services will be addressed at the conclusion of this presentation.

 Solid state lighting control is a critical component of many lighting designs. The variety of possible control approaches can be confusing and a bit overwhelming.  The goal of this presentation is to demystify the control vocabulary and provide a better understanding of the positive and negative implications of using each of the various approaches to solid state dimming.

Attendees will learn the different approaches and technologies involved with control of solid state products and the associated terminology Attendees will learn the positive and negative aspects to each approach Attendees will learn the cost/install implications of each approach Attendees will learn the basics of building a network for building control Attendees will learn code compliance requirements as applied to controls

FORWARD PHASE/LEADING EDGE INCANDESCENT STYLE MOST COMMON DIMMER TYPE LEAST EXPENSIVE DIMMER TYPE INRUSH ISSUES DUE TO CUTTING INTO THE HALF CYLCE WHEN TURNING ON

REVERSE PHASE/TRAILING EDGE ELECTRONIC LOW VOLTAGE (ELV) STYLE OFTEN PERFORMS BETTER THAN FORWARD PHASE LESSENED INRUSH ISSUES DUE TO CUTTING INTO THE HALF CYCLE WHEN TURNING OFF

INRUSH CURRENT REPETITIVE PEAK CURRENT NEMA 410 STANDARD

LED DRIVER TO LED MODULE CONSTANT CURRENT – 1:1 SITUATIONS CONSTANT VOLTAGE – LINEAR SITUATIONS

CONSTANT VOLTAGE DIMMING Constant Voltage Output

CONSTANT CURRENT DIMMING METHODS PWM – PULSE WIDTH MODULATION – RAPIDLY TURN POWER ON AND OFF CONSTANT CURRENT REDUCTION – STEADY REDUCTION OF CURRENT TO THE LED MODULE Constant Current Output

CONTROL TYPES - LED DIMMER TO LED DRIVER 2 WIRE DIMMING --------------------------------------- (FORWARD OR REVERSE PHASE CONTROL) 3 WIRE DIMMING --------------------------------------- 0-10V ------------------------------------------------------ DALI/DIGITALLY ADDRESSABLE -----------------

0-10V CONTROL OFTEN USED FOR SWITCHING AND DIMMING 2 POWER WIRES AND 2 LOW VOLTAGE CONTROL WIRES IEC 60929 STANDARD 10V - HIGH END - DEFINED AS 100% 0V - LOW END - ??? VOLTAGE LEVELS IN BETWEEN - ???

DIGITAL CONTROL DALI/DALI PLUS IECC 62386 TYPICALLY REQUIRES COMMISSIONING CAN RESULT IN PROPRIETARY SITUATION – DRIVER + CONTROLLER BY SAME MANUFACTURER DMX – 512A ANSI standard ALWAYS REQUIRES COMISSIONING USED FOR FAST AND CONTINOUS COMMUNICATION, TYPICALLY IN THEATRICAL APPLICATIONS

RF FREQUENCY WIRED - CONTROL SENT USING COMMUNICATION WIRES WIRELESS - CONTROL SENT USING RADIO WAVES TYPICAL DEVICES – OCCUPANCY SENSORS PHOTOSENSORS LOW VOLTAGE RELAY SWITCHES LINE VOLTAGE CONTROLS PLUG CONTROLS HOTEL CARD SWITCHES SHADE CONTROLS HVAC AND VALVE CONTROLLERS DOOR/WINDOW SENSORS

WIRELESS OPTIONS ENERGY HARVESTING WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY EnOcean TECHNOLOGY BATTERY POWERED WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY OPTIONS FROM MULTIPLE MANUFACTURERS
