Theories of Leadership Dr. Thomason Kaplan University

Assignment for this week Power Point Slide 10-15 slides Explore and provide examples of five of the six major categories/eras of leadership theories: 1) Great Man; 2) Trait; 3) Contingency; 4) Transformational; 5) Servant; and 6) Multi-Faceted. (p. 83-84) These leadership theories follow an historical progression from pre-1900 (“Great Man”) to the present (“Multi- Faceted”), a time in which we are heavily influenced by a “highly competitive global economy and the need to provide a more sophisticated and holistic approach to leadership.” (p. 84)

Assignment Continued Create a 10-15 slide PowerPoint presentation in which you identify and describe five distinct theories of leadership. In the course of the presentation, make sure to identify a famous leader – past or present – who exemplifies each leadership theory. In the Notes Section, please discuss the historical context of each leadership theory (i.e., when did each theory achieve recognition or prominence) and describe the leadership practices associated with each theory.

Theories of Leadership There are a variety of leaders in history that exhibit contrasting and competing qualities. There’s no one size fits all leader. And a leader may excel in one field and be a complete failure in another. (examples?)

No One Size Fits All Lyndon Johnson vs. Ronald Reagan – Both considered excellent leaders in their respective time periods. – Both were remarkably different in their styles. – Reagan “the great communicator” – Johnson- towered over his friends and enemies with the Johnson treatment.

Leaders Are Not Necessarily Individuals Before we get into the theories, let’s consider a series of questions: – Does leadership only mean an individual? – Does leadership only mean in front of the issue? – Does leadership include groups? – How do groups lead on public issues? Can you think of examples?

Within this Context, Let’s Consider the Theories of Leadership Grassroots Leadership Servant Leadership Share Leadership

Grassroots Leadership – What does grassroots leadership mean? – Can you provide some examples? http://www.piconetwork.org/about

Servant Leadership – Can you define it? – Can you provide some examples of servant leadership? Both contemporary and historical? – http://executiveeducation.wharton.upenn.edu/wha rton-aerospace-defense-report/Colleen-Barrett- on-Servent-Leadership.cfm http://executiveeducation.wharton.upenn.edu/wha rton-aerospace-defense-report/Colleen-Barrett- on-Servent-Leadership.cfm

Share Leadership – Defined? – Examples? Contemporary and historical. – http://www.heritage.org/About/Staff/F/Edwin- Feulner http://www.heritage.org/About/Staff/F/Edwin- Feulner

How do these theories fit with these? Six major categories/eras of leadership theories: 1) Great Man 2) Trait 3) Contingency 4) Transformational 5) Servant 6) Multi-Faceted. (p. 83-84) These leadership theories follow an historical progression from pre-1900 (“Great Man”) to the present (“Multi-Faceted”), a time in which we are heavily influenced by a “highly competitive global economy and the need to provide a more sophisticated and holistic approach to leadership.” (p. 84)

Are these theories simply that? Theories Has leadership really progressed? Can we argue for the evolution of leadership? Would Thomas Jefferson and Machiavelli be lost in the modern world? Would modern leaders be lost in the earlier times?

A cry for public leadership through not leading? Really? Yesterday’s Washington Post had this editorial on Obama: “This is a critical moment for the country. From the faltering economy to the burdensome deficit to our foreign policy struggles, America is suffering a widespread sense of crisis and anxiety about the future. Under these circumstances, Obama has the opportunity to seize the high ground and the imagination of the nation once again, and to galvanize the public for the hard decisions that must be made. The only way he can do so, though, is by putting national interests ahead of personal or political ones. “ http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp- dyn/content/article/2010/11/12/AR2010111202846.html?sid=ST20101 11203190
