1 Seating Assignments: Please find your name and take your seat! Welcome to Modern World History! Honors Dr. Cacace Opening Activity Instructions: Please take a seat at the desk with your name on it and complete the following: (1) Fold and display the card with your name. Make any changes to your name if necessary (2) Complete the Student Survey

2 Introductions! Find a partner by turning to the person to your left (every other person). Tell that person your name and one interesting fact about you or how you spent your summer. You will each be responsible for introducing your partner.

3 Welcome to Modern World History! We will study the social, political, geographic, and economic experiences and events that have transformed the modern world. –Industrial Revolution & French Revolution –Nationalism & The Nation-State –Imperialism –World War One –The Interwar Years & Totalitarianism –World War Two –The Cold War You will build higher level thinking, speaking, and writing skills. You will understand and question the world around you and your place in it.

4 This is an Honors Course… Designed for students who have done superior work in previous social studies courses, who have a high level of interest in history and excellent reading, writing, and analytical skills. Students will be expected to read and write extensively and to be independent learners.

5 Course Objectives To approach history critically and analytically To analyze and evaluate competing sources of historical information from multiple perspectives To describe history through the experiences of those who lived it in order to gain historical empathy and imagination To develop a clear sense of historical time in order to explain patterns of historical continuity and change To formulate and evaluate original analytical arguments using primary sources, secondary sources, and historical data To develop and deepen critical thinking, reading, speaking, and writing skills

6 Grading Policy FINAL EXAM A final exam will be given in this course. The final exam grade will be 16% of the total final year grade.

8 Assignment Policy All assignments are due at the beginning of class. If you do not turn in an assignment to the homework bin at the beginning of class it will be considered late. Assignments are to be completed at home. If you are found to be working on assignments during class time you will receive a zero. No assignments will be accepted via email!

9 Late Work Policy Late assignments will be accepted within 5 days from the original due date. Your grade on any late assignment will be reduced by 10% per day. I didn’t do my history homework because I don’t believe in dwelling on the past.

10 Extra Help and Availability Outside of Class I am more than happy to meet with students for any reason, please come by! I am available for extra help before or after school. Please make an appointment in advance to avoid any scheduling conflicts.

11 Bonus Point Opportunity! Bring in one box of tissues by the end of the week and earn an extra.5 point on your quarter one grade! Put your name on the bottom of the box.
