3 Home Life Cycle Appearance Jobs What do bats eat? Echolocation Bats are the only mammal capable of sustained flight. Bats make up a unique group, the order Chiroptera. It is divided into 2 suborders, Megachiroptera (megabats) and Microchiroptera (microbats). In all, 850 to 900 species of bats exist, far more than in any other mammal order except Rodents, and bats exceed even rodents in total abundance. 4 Home Life Cycle Appearance Jobs What do bats eat? Echolocation The gestation periods of bats are relatively long, ranging from about 44 days to 8 months in various species. Few produce more than a single offspring each year, and the young tend to mature slowly. The abundance of bats despite their low individual reproductive performances is attributable not only to the survival value of their habits but also to their remarkable longevity. Some larger species of megabats and the smaller vampire bat have survived in zoos for 20 years. Among various species of microbats banded and released in the wild, many have been recaptured after years of freedom. The record is a specimen that was recovered 31 years after it was initially marked and released in New England. Life Cycle of Bats

7 Home Life Cycle Appearance Jobs What do bats eat? Echolocation  Fruit-eating bats prefer ripe fruit.  Some bats pick up pollen for food.  Meat eating bats use vision, echolocation and sounds from their prey to help locate their food.  Fishing bats grab little fish out of the water with their claws.  Most vampire bats drink the blood of birds. One kind of vampire bat also drinks the blood of other mammals like cattle.  Seventy percent of bats eat insects. What Do Bats Eat?

8 Home Life Cycle Appearance Jobs What do bats eat? Echolocation ECHOLOCATION Bats send out sound waves using their mouth or nose. When the sound hits an object an echo comes back. The bat can identify an object by the sound of the echo. They can even tell the size, shape and texture of a tiny insect from its echo. Most bats use echolocation to navigate in the dark and find food. Links 1.How echolocation worksHow echolocation works

10 Home Life Cycle Appearance Jobs What do bats eat? Echolocation  I chose to complete my PowerPoint on bats, as I could not find enough information on tides to complete a presentation for my grade level that would be useful I the future.  I think this presentation will be a great introduction that my students will enjoy this year and I can share with my new partner teacher.  I have gained a vast amount of knowledge by creating this PowerPoint. I have not used it as much as I should have and it took a great deal of time for me to reteach myself what the program is capable of doing.  One of the features that I like about my PowerPoint is being able to connect to various links to obtain more information.  I also like the animation and graphics. I think my students will love to learn more about bats after viewing my presentation.
