Carbohydrate - Starch Test Put a sample of food in the dropping tile Add a drop of iodine solution. Iodine solution will turn from brown to blue-black in the presence of starch.

Prepare the food For the remaining tests make a thin food paste by crushing a small amount of the food in a motar using the pestle, then add a small amount of water.

Carbohydrate – glucose test Put a sample of your food stuff in a test tube. Add five drops of Benedict’s solution. Heat gently in a water bath. Benedict’s solution will turn from blue to brick red/orange in the presence of glucose.

Protein test Put a sample of your food stuff in a test tube. Add five drops of Biuret’s A & B solution. Carefully shake the test tube. Biuret’s solutions will turn from blue to purple in the presence of protein.
