© Airspan Networks Inc. Why do we need QoS in 802.16 Limited BW capacity Multiple and Dynamic number of users Multiple applications, require different treatment

© Airspan Networks Inc. Schedulers Types in WiMAX 4 types of Service Classes: –Unsolicited Grant Service (UGS) –Real-time Polling Service (rtPS) –Non-real-time Polling Service (nrtPS) –Best Effort (BE) service Other parameters which affect QoS: –CIR – minimum BW guaranteed for the user. –Priority –Maximum Latency –And many more… QoS level increase Which parameter should we use to get better results for a specific connection?

© Airspan Networks Inc. Example, with 2 users: User #1, high priority but its Max Latency is very large. User #2, low priority, but very short Max Latency. He demands his packets be delivered with no delays. Who will get more BW eventually? There are many parameters which affect QoS in different ways. As the system grows large it is almost impossible to forecast the exact QoS results. We want to be able to know how to configure our system correctly

© Airspan Networks Inc. The solution Building a tool which gets an input of QoS Scenario The Scenario includes: – –a detailed description of the system parameters, including all QoS parameters for each data connection – –Characteristics of the traffic for each connection: Demand in Kbps, packet sizes, protocol type, etc. The tool runs the scenario automatically on a real system. Afterwards, it collects the results and display them on a report.

© Airspan Networks Inc. Testing devices SmartBits device: – –Hardware based. – –Generates simple IP Packets over Ethernet frames and then sends them over the link. – –Pure packets stream. – –Examine strictly the schedulers behavior of the Base Station and the endpoints. IxChariot tool – –Second device, which also has high importance and Software based, will use the – –Software based – –Simulates real protocols (such as FTP, HTTP, VoIP, Video streams, etc.) – –Monitor QoS behavior in a manner of real application traffic Both have an applicable C language API

© Airspan Networks Inc. Step 1 – Parsing tables from Excel Using ActiveX controller, open.XLS file with pre-defined scenarios Taking advantage of Excel formatting features to create a single and restricted table format Example of a simple scenario:

© Airspan Networks Inc. Scenarios Sheet – Example #1

© Airspan Networks Inc. Step 2 – Configuring BS using SNMP BS has internal MIBs which can be configured These MIBs are used for BS parameters and Service-Flow creation The remote station, which runs the module application sends SNMP commands to the BS

© Airspan Networks Inc. Step 3,4 – Configuring Devices & launching Test We can use either of the Traffic Generator devices: SmartBits or IxChariot Each traffic generator can be fully controlled via IP network and has a full C language interface The data parsed from the excel file is adapted, then submitted to the testing device

© Airspan Networks Inc. Step 5 – Stop test and analyze results During test execution, measured results are kept in a special database for each connection. These results include Throughput and Latency & Jitter, with their Min/Max/Avg values. After test has stopped, the remote PC station retrieves results from the testing device via IP The results are then compared to the expected values, with pre- defined error margins A Pass/Fail decision is made for each connection separately

© Airspan Networks Inc. Step 6 – Producing the final report The obtained results from the last phased, along with the scenario description are appended to a report file in Excel format The report is also sent by E-mail to a list of recipients After this step, we go back to step 1 in a loop and launch another scenario on the list
