2 Context Objectives –To bring basic knowledge into primary school curricula about: the ozone layer; the causes and consequences of ozone layer depletion on human health; sun protection. –To provide teachers with well-designed and “ready-to-use” educational tools and meet their own teaching strategies. Targets –Primary school Teachers and students (6-11) –Developing countries Approach: –A comprehensive education tool: information, materials and practical resources –Materials to bring coherence in the learning and awareness-raising process –A teaching programme with a mix of learning methods –Interactive and participatory activities: a collective and involving experience

3 A Guide for Primary School Teachers Pedagogical advice: how to use the education pack Teaching programme –4 major themes divided into several teaching units  Introduction (2 units): The Earth and the Sun  Theme 1 (3 units): The ozone layer: a shield between the Earth and the sun to protect us  Theme 2 (3 units): Ozone layer depletion: let’s not take a risk!  Theme 3 (3 units): Solutions for a global problem: what can we do? –Each teaching units contains: –A short presentation of the lesson objectives –Background information, illustrations, simple and concrete messages –A set of didactic activities presented in details (subject areas, timing, objectives, location, equipment, procedures) to illustrate each lesson School initiatives –Ideas and tools to set up an Ozone and Health Action Plan at School

4 Didactic materials The Ozzy calendar –12 illustrations to support the teaching and learning process A world map –To show levels of ozone concentration, high levels of ozone depletion and UV radiation in the world The “Who Knows?” challenge –A set of 8 question/answer cards to evaluate students’ understanding of the main concepts and ideas throughout the programme The UV-Meter –A didactic tool to learn about UV radiation The Ozzy Ozone video and cartoon book “Ozzy Ozone, Defender of Our Planet ”

5 Teaching Programme Introduction: The Earth and the Sun –Unit A: The Earth and the Sun, how do they work together? –Unit B: The good effects of the sun Theme 1: The ozone layer: a shield between the Earth and the Sun to protect us –Unit A: What is the ozone layer? –Unit B: UV radiation: an invisible harm –Unit C: Where, when and why UV radiation is dangerous Theme 2: Ozone layer depletion: let’s not take a risk! –Unit A: Ozone layer depletion: what happens? –Unit B: The ‘Ozone hole’ –Unit C: What the risks are Theme 3: Solutions for a global problem: what can we do? –Unit A: Prevention: how to protect the ozone layer –Unit B: Adaptation: it’s natural to protect oneself –Unit C: Many simple ways of being sun safe
