R2E/Availability Workshop Report - RadWG October 22 nd 2014 R2E/Availability Workshop 2014 October 14-17 th 2014 R2E/Availability Workshop RadWG - Brief 1 st Report

R2E/Availability Workshop Report - RadWG October 22 nd 2014 All presentations, summaries are available at: http://indico.cern.ch/e/R2E_Review_2014 Workshop Details 2

R2E/Availability Workshop Report - RadWG October 22 nd 2014 R2E/Availability Workshop Report - RadWG October 22 nd 2014 Integrated Luminosity at particle colliders

R2E/Availability Workshop Report - RadWG October 22 nd 2014 Aiming for high availability Radiation effects Single Event Errors (SEEs) LS1 focus on mitigation From MITIGATION to PREVENTION Cumulative (long-term) damage (TID, DD) so far not encountered at LHC (experience from injectors!) Equipment failures (focus on electronics components) experience, development needs, options Components reaching the end of life with and without radiation Workshop Goals 4

R2E/Availability Workshop Report - RadWG October 22 nd 2014 Concerns for what to do next, but also in view of 22 years of LHC What needs to be done up to LS2/LS3 and for HL-LHC Radiation damage and intervention concerns in IR3/7 Design/test choices and synergies to be exploited Requirements to reach the HL-LHC target Availability Expertise & Facilities Developments & Qualification Needs Workshop Goals 5

R2E/Availability Workshop Report - RadWG October 22 nd 2014 In view of the 4 Workshop Sessions Session-1: Fundamentals of R2E and Availability Radiation Monitoring & Test Facilities: improve/operate R2E Expertise (LHC, Injectors, Experiments): keep & develop Availability: fault tracking, impact analysis: improve/adopt Needs and Goals 6

R2E/Availability Workshop Report - RadWG October 22 nd 2014 In view of the 4 Workshop Sessions Session-2: Concerned Equipment: up to LS2/LS3/HL-LHC Development needs and R2E requirements: R2E structure? Maintenance and lifetime (with & w/o. rad.): What is known and what needs to be? How to improve availability: What can and has to be done? Needs and Goals 7

R2E/Availability Workshop Report - RadWG October 22 nd 2014 In view of the 4 Workshop Sessions Session-3: IR3/7 Damage/Maintenance Issues Failure risks due to radiation/environment: is there any show-stopper? Needs: monitoring, handling, testing: what is ok and what needs to be improved? Maintenance, life-time & mitigation: what is the equipment requirement/strategy? Needs and Goals 8

R2E/Availability Workshop Report - RadWG October 22 nd 2014 In view of the 4 Workshop Sessions Session-4: Long-term strategy Mitigation/Prevention strategy & needs: are we on the right track? SCL & rad-tol PC options/needs/roadmap: what is the (combined) best strategy? Required developments & synergies: what are and can be common grounds? Needs and Goals 9

R2E/Availability Workshop Report - RadWG October 22 nd 2014 R2E LHC Long-Term R2E SEE Failure Analysis ~250 h Downtime 2008-2011 Analyze and mitigate all safety relevant cases and limit global impact 2011-2012 Focus on long downtimes and shielding LS1 (2013/2014) Final relocation and shielding LS1-LS2 (2015-2018) Tunnel equipment and power converters -> LS3-HL-LHC Tunnel Equipment (Injectors + LHC) + RRs ~400 h Downtime LS1 – LS2 Aiming for <0.5 dumps / fb -1 ~12 dumps / fb -1 ~3 dumps / fb -1 HL-LHC: < 0.1 dumps / fb -1 10 Relocation & Shielding Equipment Upgrades

R2E/Availability Workshop Report - RadWG October 22 nd 2014 11 R2E LHC Long-Term

R2E/Availability Workshop Report - RadWG October 22 nd 2014 R2E: LS1-LS2-LS3-HL-LHC 12

R2E/Availability Workshop Report - RadWG October 22 nd 2014 R2E/Availability Workshop Report - RadWG October 22 nd 2014 Workshop Highlights picking-up on the previous summaries/discussions: Aiming for 4000fb -1 Calculations/Monitoring/Operation/Reporting Facilities/Testing/Support Fault Tracking Tools/Use/Reporting Lifetime issues: identified: (cables, magnets, vacuum) -> + Injectors Interventions: room for further improvement (tooling, robotic, …) Availability: r2e to remain small part, many other things to be addressed -> significant overall improvement needed Long term ‘stock’ of spares required (all critical systems addressed) Many new developments (replacements) required for HL-LHC PC mitigation on-going (FGClite, rad-tol converters) SCL links well advanced (also for global HL-LHC requirements) RRs: not necessarily needed r2e – for other reasons (RP, +?) 13

R2E/Availability Workshop Report - RadWG October 22 nd 2014 R2E/Availability Workshop Report - RadWG October 22 nd 2014 Discussion Points picking-up on the previous summaries/discussions: Feedback of the groups: the preparations were useful they partly directly lead to follow-ups General radiation (damage) needs (not only R2E): LHC + Injectors Testing, Facilities, Monitoring – all there? expertise/support? Possible common needs + synergies: several were pointed-out -> how to make them happen? (PH + A&T!) R2E/Availability: clear needs for both for Run2/3/x -> what is the most effective structure? Outsourcing/qualified components/ ect. -> balanced costs/efforts? Resources: enough / at the right place? List of follow-ups: significant -> how to make sure that it’s ‘followed’? 14

R2E/Availability Workshop Report - RadWG October 22 nd 2014 Feedback Do you have any specific feedback concerning the workshop Report With the session chairs and organizers we’re currently working on the summary and main messages/conclusions This will then be presented to the management (forum, etc. to be defined) Follow-up The identified follow-up actions will be addressed -> through RadWG/R2E-Project/+? Next 15

R2E/Availability Workshop Report - RadWG October 22 nd 2014 R2E Project Equipment Groups R2E Organization Break-Down Implement, Support, Coordinate, Develop, Operate, Maintain 16 LHC and Injector Committees (IEFC, LMC) Radiation Working Group RADWG Monitoring & Calculations Working Group MCWG Mitigation: rad-tol developments (+relocation /shielding) Operation Follow-up Rad-Tol Developments Radiation Tests Monitoring & Dosimetry Test Facilities

R2E/Availability Workshop Report - RadWG October 22 nd 2014 R2E/Availability Workshop Report - RadWG October 22 nd 2014 THANK YOU ALL Workshops like this never come in the ‘right’ moment, but still… All presenters and respective people/teams involved did an excellent job and invested a lot of effort – THANK YOU Geraldine Jean and Julia Cachet who helped us all along with the organization of: website, coffee breaks, dinner, conference room, etc. – MANY MANY THANKS The session chairs, workshop organizers and helpers for putting the very intense and efficient program together, as well as keeping all sessions (almost ) within their challenging time limits - CONGRATS CERN management supporting (pushing) for this workshop … and … allowing for the very useful and effective dinner discussions – THANK YOU 17
