2 PHRASAL VERBS DEFINITION: A phrasal verb ( PV ) is made up of two or more parts that function as a single verb. They are sometimes called two-word verbs because they usually consist of a verb plus a second word The second part of the phrasal verb is a particle, this shows close association with the verb and its distinction with prepositions and other adverbs.

3 call on : visit call off : cancel call for : request; suggest call someone up : telephone

4 cut down :Decrease it cut off : stop the supply of get ahead :advance, obtain advantages, such as points, etc. get along with : be friendly get back at :get revenge

5 get at: imply = contain get by : manage or deal successfully with get over : recover from get rid of : throw away brush it off : not to let it have an effect brush up on : review; relearn

6 come across : unexpectedly find
come down with : get sick with look after : take care of look into : investigate fill out ( complete ) find out ( Discover ) Do over ( repeat ) Pass out ( distribute )

7 look it over : look at it briefly
pick on : bother pick out : choose pick someone up : come/go and get Hold off : postpone = delay

8 Turn down : refuse take place : happen take turns: alternate take up : begin pull it off : succeed play up : increase the significance of turn down : refuse

9 Lay off: fire run into : unexpectedly meet give up : surrender Examples: * I ‘ve done all I can . I just can’t do anything more . I give up. *while I was at the market , I was surprised to run into a friend I hadn’t seen in months.

* The doctor told him to cut down on cigarettes. * Ali had the flu but he got over it.
