The Scientific Revolution – Part One Unit Four Day One Teacher’s Edition

Today’s Main Idea: During the scientific revolution the way we understood the world was changing. The change in science and thought brought with it much controversy and debate. Today in class we are going to examine the individuals who helped to bring the Scientific Revolution.

On the brink of discovery…  During the middle ages science had not moved much beyond ancient scholarship.  Basically, they were still using scientific theories from ancient Rome and Greece.

 Before the scientific revolution the church sponsored scholars were the authority on scientific matters.  This meant that the church controlled the study of science Who needs science…when you have world history! History is so much better!

What the old dudes thought…  Geocentric- people believed that the earth was the center of the universe and that the sun revolved around the earth  Lets model this….  Now draw a picture right here in your notes

So where did the new dudes get their ideas?  Trade with the middle east opened European minds about advances around the world  Remember: The Compass and the Astrolabe came from Asia  This allowed sailors to travel farther distances!  By the 1500’s individuals began to question church officials

Fancy Definition of the Scientific Revolution:  Scientific Revolution – new theories about natural world and the development procedures to test those theories

 Exploration and exposure to new things creates the desire to study the new materials that explorers had found  Interest in studying the natural world fueled the scientific revolution.  Scientific exploration reviewed flaws in Ancient science and thinking.

So how did these dudes do science?  Scientific Method – new approach to scientific study, there are five basic steps  Same five steps we use today.  In your book it list the five steps of the scientific theory. You are going to have five minutes. With your group members you need to list and draw a picture representing each step in the scientific method.  Do this on the next slide – Page 171

The Scientific Method: Step#Symbol: #1 #2 #3 #4 #5

Copernicus:  Heliocentric Theory – earth revolves around the sun, he believed the other planets revolved around the earth  This was not a new idea, he just explained the math behind it!  Copernicus knew that the church would not except this theory. His math explanation was not totally developed, so waited to release this theory till later in his life.

 Lets model this.  Draw a diagram below illustrating this!

In a galaxy far, far away…  Brahe and Kepler realizes that stars are distant objects  Brahe System – the earth and the five known planets all revolve around the sun  Lets model this!  Now you draw it!

Looking into a galaxy far, far away:  Galileo built the first telescope  He got the idea from the spy glasses that sailors used to use  He was the first to see Saturn’s rings Oh my heavens, I just saw the rings of Saturn!
