Confidential3 6/1/2 Adding Integers Let's review what we learned in the last lesson. INTEGERS are all of the positive whole numbers, their opposites, and zero. Example:.....-5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,...... Integers consist of positive numbers, negative numbers and zero (which is neither positive or negative)

Confidential4 6/1/2 Adding Integers Two numbers that are the same distance from zero on the number line are called opposites Example 6 and -6 The ABSOLUTE VALUE of a number is its distance from zero on the number line. Absolute Value is always Positive. 9 = 9 -11 = 11

Confidential19 6/1/2 Adding Integers Method 3 - Rules for adding integers Adding the Same Sign - The sum of 2 positive numbers is POSITIVE. The sum of 2 negative numbers is NEGATIVE. Example: 4 + 7 = 11 (-3) + (-6) = (-9) 11 + 8 = 19 (-9) + (-1) = (-10)
