People and Movement

Movement and the Environment People moved from Asia to North America by crossing a “land bridge”, which was frozen water. Migration: movement of people Took thousands of years Moved to find new resources OR natural disasters and climate changes caused groups to move. Sometimes they moved to escape conflict with others.

Coastal Plain Rivers and low area make it easy for people to travel and move goods. Difficulties: wetlands- Great Dismal Swamp, Outer Banks, shallow water, and storms. Cape Hatteras is called the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” because so many ships were wrecked there.

Piedmont Higher elevation or height of the land above sea level Fall line was difficult to cross because the land is steep and rivers drop from the Piedmont as waterfalls or rapids. Thick forests also made migration difficult. Settlers found a way to the Piedmont from the north called the “Great Wagon Road”.

Mountains Part of the frontier or an area beyond settled land. Moving to the mountains was not easy because of the narrow steep trails. Rock slides, snowstorms and floods were some of the dangers.

Your turn Illustrate a picture depicting one of the difficulties that settlers faced migrating to North Carolina. Use pages 30-33 in your text books for assistance.
