MRS. ANNE FARMER ACT English Test: Rhetorical Questions

Wordiness Questions 1. Less is best. 2. If you have four paraphrased sentences, the shortest answer is ALWAYS the correct one. 3. Must be four paraphrases, restatement of text or passage. 4. See page 69-70.

“Omit the Underlined Portion” Question 1. On every test; 50% of these questions the “Omit” option is correct. Omit means delete. 2. TIP: always read the omit or delete the underlined portion option first, omitting the part that has been underlined. If it’s grammatically correct and makes sense, select this option. Move on. 3. Select “omit” if the text is redundant or repeats itself. 4. Make sure the sentence makes sense if you delete words or phrases

“Correct Word Choice” Question 1. Choose the appropriate word that matches the meaning in the sentence. 2. Synonyms means the same. 3. ACT never uses colloquial language or slang so never select ‘blow off” or “lazy and bored to tears.” 4. Workbook page 73-75

Commonly Confused Word Pairs Affect (v) to have an effect on or to influence Effect (n) to cause something to happen Can (v) to be able to May (v)to be allowed to Less (adj) can’t be counted Fewer (adj)can be counted Farther (adv) at a greater distance, (adj) more distant Further (adv) to a greater extent, (v) to help advance Accept (v) to agree to Except (v) to leave out, (conj) but

“Best-word Choice” Question 1. Similar to “correct” choice question; you must decide which underlined word makes sense. 2. Read the question carefully, UNDERLINING KEY WORDS, to make sure you understand the question. Formulate response before looking at options. 3. TIP: Questions that include the words “example” or “illustrates” require an answer that gives specific examples. 4. Page 75

“Add-On sentence” Question 1. These “what if” questions ask you to decide “if the author were to add…” what would he/she say? 2. UNDERLINE THE KEY WORDS IN THE QUESTION and you will answer correctly 3. There are two general categories: 1. *general (main idea) will have a general answer 2. *specific (specific fact or example) will have a detailed answer. 3. Workbook page 77-78

“Yes or No” Questions 1. Are very popular. 2. Look at the two “no”options first and turn to the “yes” options only if both “Nos” have been eliminated. 3. Most of these questions are one of the “no” options. 4. FYI- the ACT has given tests where ALL the options are Nos and then gives a test where all the options are YES. Be warned. Pg. 80
