American Romanticism: A study of American writing and Ideas from 1800-1860 Final Essay Objective: By completing unit portfolio which includes a REVISED analysis essay, UNIT REFLECTION, and PROGRESS CHECKS students will provide EVIDENCE of standards mastery.

Directions: As we have gone through the unit, you have practiced the skills to master the standards by discussing, analyzing, and writing literary analysis which explored American Romantic literature. You will bring together the best evidence of what you have learned through this unit in a REVISED MLA STYLE ESSAY and REFLECTION.

Introduction: Can you define American Romanticism? TOPIC SENTENCE: What is American Romanticism? INTRODUCTION TO EVIDENCE: What historical conditions was it reacting against? What does Romanticism value? EVIDENCE: Describe examples of Romantic art work which depict values and features of Romanticism. ANALYSIS: What ideas and values do these art pieces reveal about Romanticism as a philosophical movement? COMMENTARY: What is the Romantic view of knowledge? How is it different from Rationalism? Do you agree with it? Why or why not?

Body Paragraph 2 & 3 Used MLA style by clearly citing where you found the evidence. Make sure that you eliminate all distractions to your ideas. Thus, the work should be ENTIRELY free of spelling, mechanical, and grammar errors. The essay should seamlessly reveals author’s purpose and main idea and analyzes the author’s uses of literary devices such as imagery, figures of speech, paradox, and symbolism as support. Commentary should reveal insight of the texts’ relevance to the formation of American identity and culture. Academic vocabulary is integrated in writing to reveal sophistication and academic style.

Reflection: Paragraph 5 TOPIC SENTENCE: What did you learn about American literature, culture, and thought by studying the works of American Romantic authors and thinkers? INTRODUCE EVIDENCE: What idea(s) did these writers communicate which helped you understand this country better? EVIDENCE: Which assignments did you choose to revise? Why? What improvements did you make to your writing? ANALYSIS: What do these revisions and the overall writing reveal about your work show about what you learned, where you stand in your development as a scholar, or the connections you made to the content? COMMENTARY: What did you enjoy the MOST about this unit: the reading? the analysis as a class through discussion? writing the analyses? WHY? Which text did you feel you connected with most? Why?
