2. Lesson Goal: Identify the values of colonists in the Middle Colonies and determine how to communicate those values through symbolic images. Outcomes: Be able to... 1.Define these terms: Patroon, proprietary colony, proprietor, royal colony, cash crop, backcountry 2.Identify these individuals/concepts: Peter Stuyvesant, William Penn, Quakers, Pennsylvania Dutch, Breadbasket Colonies, Great Wagon Road. 3.Identify the four Middle Colonies. 4.Explain why William Penn started a colony in North America. 5.Explain why the Middle Colonies were known as the Breadbasket Colonies. 6.Describe what everyday life was like in the backcountry.

3. Starter #1 Today you are not merely a student, you are a professional graphic artist. Your mission, should you decide to accept (yes, the alternative is a zero), is to select one of the four Middle Colonies and design a flag, a seal, or a coin that portrays the values and/or significant events that symbolize that colony. Follow these guiding steps: 1. Begin by determining the significant events and values that pertain to that colony. 2. Decide what symbolic images could convey those values and/or events. 3. Decide which object you will develop—a flag, a coin, or a seal. 4. As you draw the symbolic images, plan how you will present this to the class. When you finish your artistic rendering, do p. 105, #4, 5, and 6. Place that in the side box when you are done.
