2011 NCDA CDF ACTIVITIES

Activities Detailed Survey and analysis of CDF Curriculum was conducted. Results are being used to update and revise CDF Curriculum. Third Edition of Facilitating Career Development is scheduled to be completed and available for purchase in December 2011. LinkedIn Group is active and ongoing. Ongoing development of new materials and updating of additional resources for the CDF Instructors on the Secure Section of the CDF website.

Activities Cont. Solicited nominations for the 2011 CDF Award. Award was presented to Eileen M. Fleming-Patonay on Thursday. Developed and solicited nominations for the CDF Champion Award. Award was presented to two outstanding CDF Champions – Susan Gabriel and Raymond Henson on Thursday. Developing a Veterans monograph in conjunction with the Publications Development Council (PDC). Completion date is scheduled for Winter 2011/2012.

Helping Skills New sections on self care, the use of silence, and the importance of hope in the helping process Expanded information on best practices in client termination Value-added insights on the use of helping skills inserted into every CDF chapter

Theory A new section addressing the constructivist theory of Mark Savickas A full update on Krumboltz’ theory, including his latest thoughts on the role of happenstance in career development Additional case studies and opportunities to use them in the application of career theories

Assessment A new section on ethics and assessment Insightful suggestions for reviewing, analyzing, and selecting assessment instruments Clarification and expansion on understanding the credentials needed to administer and interpret career assessments

Diversity Updated demographic information just released from the 2010 Census data New sections on generational diversity and on the career development needs of ex-offenders, veterans, and refugees Perspectives on the impact of globalization on career services

Job Search Expanded coverage of networking with a special emphasis on social networking Suggestions for helping clients to understand job search from an employer perspective A new section on addressing stress in the job search, particularly during difficult economic times

Technology and Career Information A masterful merger of previous individual chapters on the use of computers and information in career planning, including widely used and emerging technologies Suggestions for helping clients to become more information literate Guidelines for CDFs on the selection and effective use of technologies in the career planning process

Ethics Focus on NCDA’s code of ethics as a robust and inclusive guide for career professionals, including CDFs A new activity on personal values and their impact on professional decision-making Updated case studies and enhanced scenarios

Groups A new emphasis on the delivery of career services in groups, including workshop planning and preparation of materials Understanding classroom dynamics and learning styles and customizing instruction to address individual needs

Program Planning/Implementation Expanded to a comprehensive 12-step model of program development focusing on best practices and crucial roles for CDFs Guided activities that parallel the 12-step process and offer participants opportunities to practice these skills first hand Information on the importance of stakeholders in implementation of career programs and how CDFs can involve these key players to increase the likelihood of the program’s success

Master Trainer Workshop Next training is scheduled for November 13-16, 2011 in Dallas, Texas. Application form will be posted to NCDA website before August 1 and will be due September 15.

Master Trainer Workshop Requirements Existing NCDA CDF Instructor 5 years experience training adults Presented on career topic at state or national conference OR published articles on career topics Must have taught at least 5 CDF training classes Complete application form will be available at www.ncdacdf.org before August 1.
