4 WORD PARTS: 1-Prefix 2-Word Root 3-Suffix
You can have parts in a medical term!

5 Word Root The word part that usually indicates the part of the body involved, colors Cannot stand alone Are the foundation of medical terms Usually have their meaning form Latin or Greek words

6 Examples of “WORD ROOTS”
Neuro (nerve) Osteo (bone) Cardio (heart) Myelo (spinal cord) My (muscle) Arthro (joint)

7 WORD ROOT (CONT’D) The letter “O” is commonly used at the end of a word root….before a suffix is added, if the suffix begins with a consonant Example: Cardi/o Cardi/o/myopathy This is called COMBINING FORM

8 PREFIXES- come in front of root word
PREFIXES- come in front of root word. Usually tell time, location, duration Pre + Natal = Prenatal Hypo + Tension =Hypotension Sub + Dural = Subdural

9 SUFFIXES- come after root word
SUFFIXES- come after root word. Usually tell condition, procedure, disease or disorder Gas + itis = Gastritis Spleen + ectomy = Spleenectomy Angio + plasty = Angioplasty
