2. We studied several types of weather in Ch. 3

3. Precipitation WATER – Part of the HYDROLOGIC CYCLE
Every place on earth gets some type:
Rain
Sleet
Snow
Hail
The convection movement of moist air causes PRECIPITATION
The amount differs
Heavy Precipitation= more tropical
LOW Precipitation= dry/arid (desert)

4. Consider the Difference Precipitation Amounts can Cause on the landscape
An area of Low Precipitation
An area of High Precipitation

5. Weather Tornado- a funnel shaped cloud during a severe rainstorm
Severe and damaging
Can happen without warning
Hurricane- a severe tropical storm
Characterized by high winds, damaging tides, flooding
Can be different category strengths from 1 weaker-4 severe
In ASIA, a hurricane is known as a typhoon

6. Blizzard a winter storm A severe weather condition characterized by low temperatures and strong winds (greater than 32 mi/hr) bearing a great amount of snow. When these conditions continue after the falling snow has ended, it is termed a ground blizzard.

8. Consider the information on climate from the following website:
First a definition... What the heck is a climate? Is it weather? Is it the rain? Is it a hot day in August? Yes, yes and yes, but only in one place at a time. Climate is the atmospheric condition in a certain location near the surface of the Earth. Is the Aurora Borealis (Northern lights) a climate? No. Is there such a thing as a global climate? Yes. Kind of. It's all of the climates of the planet added up. If the Earth were getting hotter you would have to say, "All of the global climates are increasing in temperature." Climate Variety
There are many types of climates across the Earth. You live in one of them or one the border between two. Every year as the seasons change, your climate changes a bit. It might get warmer or colder. You might have more or less rain. You might have more or less sunlight that changes all of that other stuff.

12. Climate Change Caused by Greenhouse Gasses
They are believed to cause global warming

13. Types of Trees Needleleaf Deciduous Coniferous (means they bear cones)
Pine, fir, and cedar

Broadleaf tree
Some loose leaves in the FALL- if weather is cold

14. Biomes
A specific area containing interdependent plants and animals

15. Examples of Biomes
Forest
Desert
Or Grassland

16. Windward and Leeward sides of a Mountain
Windward: the side the wind blows against- results in precipitation
Leeward: the side of the mountain opposite the breezes – results in a dry arid climate

17. Example of Leeward/Windward is
The Sandwich Islands- notice the ‘Rain shadow desert” on the leeward side.

18. Equinox- sun’s rays are directly overhead- happens 2 times each year
