1 The Three Means of Persuasion

2 The Three Means of Persuasion
Back in ancient Greece some guys (Aristotle and Plato) without real jobs would sit around and talk about how to persuade people. They came up with three means of persuading people to see your point of view.

3 Ethos Ethos (meaning character) is an ethical appeal to the audience based on the character of the author/speaker. This means people listen to you because you seem to know what you are talking about.

4 Pathos Pathos (meaning experience) is an appeal to the audience’s emotions. Language choice plays a huge part in emotion.

5 Logos Logos (meaning word) is an appeal to the audience using reasoning. You use facts to make your case that make it hard to argue against your side.

6 Summarized Version Ethos: Logos: Pathos:
the source's credibility, the speaker's/author's authority Logos: the logic used to support a claim; can also be the facts and statistics used to help support the argument. Pathos: the emotional or motivational appeals; vivid language, emotional language and numerous sensory details.

7 The Three Means of Persuasion
When you are given the task to persuade, you need to choose the best means of reaching your goal. The same method of persuasion may not always work for every argument.
