Goals of Our Study To learn how God moved from man's problem of sin to His solution of Jesus on the cross To understand how everything in the scriptures relates to, and points to, Jesus and the cross To understand how everything in the Bible reveals God to mankind - who He is and what He is like Get a better understanding of how we got here tonight on the orange carpet 3 of 25

Recap "Scheme of Redemption" - The plan of God, established before creation, to redeem mankind from sin View the Bible as one book with the real division taking place at Genesis 3:6 rather than between Malachi and Matthew This division covers two drastically different worlds: The world prior to sin and the world after sin 4 of 25

Recap Genesis 1-2: God and perfection, man and innocence Strife and tragedy were unheard of Adam did not lie awake at night stressing over how he was going to resolve a problem in his life or how he was going to survive. Genesis 3-12 – “The Background of Redemption” The true division of the Bible takes place at Genesis 3:6. Everything changed here 5 of 25

Recap Sin the source of all suffering and no one is immune from its effects God is not to blame – It was our choice Romans 3:23 – For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God Each of us have indirectly eaten of the wrong tree Each of is responsible for the nails in Jesus 6 of 25

Last week we discussed… How sin changed the earth in physical ways, and also how it affected the lives of mankind Survival suddenly became a serious issue for mankind The first foreshadowing of redemption was spoken of by God in Genesis 3:15 (bruise heel/head) The fall of Cain and his evil descendants 8 of 25

Evil descendants of Cain Genesis 4:23-24 - Lamech said to his wives, “Adah and Zillah, Listen to my voice, You wives of Lamech, Give heed to my speech, For I have killed a man for wounding me; And a boy for striking me; 24 If Cain is avenged sevenfold, Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.“ Lamech is a 5 th generation descendant of Cain, yet is fully aware of Cain’s curse from possibly hundreds of years earlier The stories were passed down! 9 of 25

The path to the cross begins Genesis 4:17-24 - Adam had relations with his wife again; and she gave birth to a son, and named him Seth, for, she said, “God has appointed me another offspring in place of Abel, for Cain killed him.” 26 To Seth, to him also a son was born; and he called his name Enosh. Then men began to call upon the name of the Lord. Can we safely assume that Adam and Eve instilled a love of God into Seth? 10 of 25

Lineage from Adam to Noah Interesting points on this lineage It covers just over 2000 years!! It’s possible that all of Noah’s ancestors, to include his father, may have met and personally known Adam Noah’s grandfather, Methuselah, died the same year that the flood began Possible that he died in the flood, but unlikely with him being the son of Enoch 12 of 25

Lineage from Adam to Noah What’s the big deal? It helps us to put it all together in our minds The story of God is passed along Just as Cain’s 5 th generation grandson was fully aware of Cain’s curse, so would Noah be aware of his God-fearing lineage Noah would continue to pass the knowledge of God on to his descendants 13 of 25

Total Corruption of Mankind Genesis 6:1-2 – Now it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them, 2 that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose 14 of 25

Total Corruption of Mankind Genesis 6:1-2 – Now it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them, 2 that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose Who are the “sons of God” and the “daughters of men” referring to? The righteous lineage of Seth The evil lineage of Cain 15 of 25

Oil and water… Righteousness and unrighteousness do not mix! It’s much easier to pull someone down than it is to pull someone up More often than not, evil corrupts righteousness Even the best of us can succumb to evil and can have our lives destroyed by it 16 of 25

Oil and water… 1 John 2:15-16 - Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world 1 Corinthians 15:33 – Bad company corrupts good morals 17 of 25

Oil and water… 2 Corinthians 6:14-16 – Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? 15 Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever? 16 Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God KJV uses the phrase “unequally yoked” Bottom line – There is much danger in partnering ourselves up with unbelievers and the immoral. One side will have to give, and more often than not, it’s the Christian who is pressured to give 18 of 25

Oil and water… Deuteronomy 7:3-4 – Furthermore, you shall not intermarry with them; you shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor shall you take their daughters for your sons. 4 For they will turn your sons away from following Me to serve other gods Wise King Solomon was led to destruction by pagan women Samson was led to destruction by a pagan woman 19 of 25

Admonition for our children We must strongly urge our young people to make bonds of friendship with God fearing and God following people! Many of us stress our desire for our children to attend Christian colleges, and there is a reason why! We must strongly urge our young people to marry God fearing and God following people! And we must make no apologies for this. This is absolutely nothing for us to be ashamed of! 20 of 25

What’s the worst that could happen? Genesis 6:5-7 – Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 The Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. 7 The Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky; for I am sorry that I have made them.” It doesn’t get much worse than this 21 of 25

More insight to God’s hurt Genesis 6:11-12 – Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 God looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth. 22 of 25

The plan for the flood begins Genesis 6:3 – Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.” A 120 year countdown begins, during which God would work with a man named Noah to spare mankind What does all of this say about God? He is just – Evil must be handled He is merciful – He could have ended it all He is longsuffering 23 of 25

Meet Noah Genesis 6:8-9 – But Noah found favor in the eyes of the L ORD …Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his time; Noah walked with God Why is this such a monumental statement? Of all the people on the earth (most likely millions), only Noah found favor with God What was different about Noah? Safe to assume that Noah did not mix himself up with the unrighteous He remained faithful to God He was blessed to have parents who led him to God 24 of 25

A preacher of righteousness 2 Peter 2:5 refers to Noah as a preacher of righteousness Do you think God would have spared anyone else who repented during the 120 year timespan? You can bet on it! Note that we are never told that Noah’s wife, his sons, nor his son’s wives were upstanding and righteous people. We just assume so. Yet, they were also saved 25 of 25
