Unit 1-Class Agenda Introduction Orientation Course Syllabus. Learning Objectives Discussion on Assignments. Lesson Presentation and Discussions. Discussion on Lab Activities. Break Times as per School Regulations.

Class Objectives Describe the purpose and function of an operating system. Reading: Computer Structure and Logic, Chapter 8, pp. 281–322

Concept Types of Operating Systems Different Versions of Windows operating system Windows Operating System Interfaces Disk Partitions, Files, and Folders Management System Management Tools

What is Operating System? Definition: An operating system is a program that controls the execution of applications and act as an interface between application and computer hardware  manages the computer hardware.  provides the basis on which application programs can be built and run.  acts as an intermediary between the user and the hardware.

Objectives of Operating Systems 1.Convenience: Makes computer convenience to use 2.Efficiency: allow efficient use of computer system resources 3.Ability to evolve: should permit effective development, testing and introduction of new functions

Functions of Operating Systems: 1.Provides user interface 2.Serves as an Extended Machines 3.Serves as Resources Manager 4.Hides the complexity and truth about hardware 5.Protect hardware and software resources

Services Provided by Operating System  Tools for program development  Steps for program execution  Provides access to I/O devices  Controlled access to files  Controls access to Systems  Ensure error detection and response  Collect user statistics and monitors performance

What is an Operating System(OS) Android, BlackBerry 1, iOS Linux, OS X Red Hat Enterprise Server Ubuntu Windows 7, Windows 8 Windows Phone, Windows RT Windows Server 2008, 2012, 2016 Sankofa OS

Examples of Operating System Unix (4.3BSD, SunOS, Ultrix, HPUX, Solaris, OSF1, FreeBSD, DOS (MSDOS, Windows 3.1, 95, 98, ME) NT (NT 3.51, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Vista, Widows 7, 8, 10) Vax VMS, GEC OS4000, CP/M PDA: PalmOS, Psion 3, Psion EPOC, Linux, Blackberry Routers: Cisco IOS, Juniper JunOS, Procket, XOS Embedded: car, phone, digital camera, iPod, DSL router, WiFi AP.

The Windows Desktop-Interface Desktop is the initial screen for a display Windows Desktop provides a graphical user interface (GUI) Windows 7 and Vista desktop provides a 3-D user interface called the Aero user interface Windows 8 User Interface is called Metro Windows 10 combines Aero and Metro.

The Windows 7 desktop using the Aero interface has a glassy transparent look 13

The Windows Desktop Start menu – Username shown at the top right – Applications used often are listed in the white left column (can change from time to time) – User libraries, files and OS utilities are listed in the dark right column 14

The Windows Desktop How to launch an application – Use the Start menu Click the Start button and select All Programs – Use the Search box Click the Start button and enter the name of the program in the Search box provided – Use Windows Explorer or the Computer window To use the Computer window in Windows 7 or Vista, click Start, Computer – Use a shortcut icon Right-click the program file in the Computer or Explorer windows and select Create shortcut 15

Files and Directories Every OS manages a hard drive, optical drive, USB drive, or other type of drive by using directories (also called folders), subdirectories, and files Drive is organized with a single root directory – At top of the top-down hierarchical structure of subdirectories – Exception: hard drive Divided into partitions Each volume has its own root directory and hierarchical structure of subdirectories 16

Figure 3-10 Storage devices such as a USB drive, CD, or hard drive, are organized into directories and subdirectories that contain files 17

Navigate the Folder Structure Tips to navigate when working with Windows Explorer or Computer window (cont.) – To control column headings that appear in the Details view, right-click a column heading and select the headings that you want to appear 18 Figure 3-14 Right-click a column heading to select columns to display in the Details view

File and folder management Create a folder or file: Delete file or Folder Copy file or folder Check file attribute. 19

Create a Folder Create a folder: – Select parent folder Right-click in the white area of the right pane Select New from the shortcut menu Select one of three choices for folder types Make a selection Folder is created and highlighted so that it may be renamed Can create folders within folders within folders – The maximum length of a path and filename cannot exceed 260 characters 20

Window Tool Control Panel Management console. System Information utility. Task manager Window Explorer Internet Explorer

Summary OS manages system resources for users and applications Windows 7 and Vista desktop offers the Aero user interface Four ways to launch an application: use the Start menu, search box, Windows Explorer, or a shortcut The right side of the taskbar is called the notification area (also known as system tray) Windows Explorer and Computer are used to manage files, folders, and libraries 22

Unit 1 Assignment and Lab Assignment 1: Short Answer: Answer questions on the purpose and functions of an operating system Lab 1: Complete the lab titled “Identifying the Operating System.”
