3 www.theciajenkins.com Objectives Participant will be able to define cultural competence. Participant will be able to describe the five elements that contribute to a system’s ability to become more culturally competent.

4 www.theciajenkins.com Objectives Participant will be able to identify and discuss the six stages of cultural competence based on an individual/organizational level. Participant will be able to initiate an individual/organizational plan to increase cultural competence in their prospective work setting.

5 www.theciajenkins.com Culture The word culture is used because it implies the integrated pattern of human behavior that includes thoughts, communications, actions, customs, beliefs, values and institutions of a racial, ethnic, religious, or social group.

6 www.theciajenkins.com Competence Having the capacity to function effectively within the context of culturally integrated patterns of human behavior defined by the group.

7 www.theciajenkins.com Cultural Competence Set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together in a system or agency among professionals and enable the system, agency, or professionals to work effectively in cross-cultural situations.

11 www.theciajenkins.com Cultural Destructiveness Individual Viewpoint Views culture as a problem Believe that culture can be suppressed or destroyed; people will be better off Believe that people should be more like the mainstream Assumes that one culture is superior

12 www.theciajenkins.com Cultural Destructiveness: Organizational View At the societal level, this viewpoint taken to the extreme leads to such things as genocide. An example of this occurred when the Bureau of Indian Affairs mandated boarding schools that decimated the cultures of many Native Americans.

13 www.theciajenkins.com Cultural Incapacity: Individual View Lack cultural awareness skills May have been brought up in a homogenous society Maintains stereotypes Believes in racial (sexual, economic, religious, ect.) superiority of a dominant group and assumes paternalistic posture towards others

14 www.theciajenkins.com Cultural Incapacity: Organizational View At this organizational level, this translates into supporting segregation or having lower expectations of persons from underserved groups

15 www.theciajenkins.com Cultural Blindness: Individual View See others in terms of their own culture and claim that all people are exactly alike Believe that culture makes no difference Believe that all people should be treated the same

16 www.theciajenkins.com Cultural Blindness: Organizational View At the organizational view, services are so ethnocentric that they are virtually useless to all but the most assimilated

17 www.theciajenkins.com Cultural Pre-Competence Individual View Recognize that there are cultural difference and start to educate themselves and others concerning these differences Realize their shortcoming May become complacent

18 www.theciajenkins.com Cultural Pre-Competence: Organizational View At the organizational level, an attempt is made to address diversity issues by, for instance, hiring a diverse staff, offering cultural sensitivity training, promoting diverse staff to upper management

19 www.theciajenkins.com Basic Cultural Competence: Individual View Accept, appreciate and accommodate cultural differences Value diversity and accept and respect difference Accept the influence of their own culture in relation to other cultures Understand the dynamics of when cultures intersect

20 www.theciajenkins.com Basic Cultural Competence: Organizational View At the organizational level, an effort is made to hire unbiased employees, to seek advice from under-served communities, and to assess what can be provided to diverse clients

21 www.theciajenkins.com Advanced Cultural Competence: Individual View Move beyond accepting, appreciating and accommodating cultural differences and actively educate less informed individuals about cultural difference Seek out knowledge, develop skills to interact in diverse environments, become allies with and are comfortable interacting with others in multi-cultural settings

22 www.theciajenkins.com Advanced Cultural Competence: Organizational View At the organizational level, this translates into conducting research, hiring staff who are specialist in cultural competence practices, and acting as an advocate
