20 YEAR ADVENTURE AUTHOR OF STORY: HOMER TRANSLATED BY: ROBERT FITZGERALD (1910-1985) P BY: OMANI VALENTIN

AUTHOR’S SLIDE Back story: Homer is a poet in B.C times from (800 B.C.E to 701 B.C.E) Besides “The Odyssey”, Homer also made another similar story that also represented western culture. The story was called “The Iliad”. Where homer was born and his birth cannot be specified it’s still a mystery. Interesting facts: Homer was indeed blind and imposed those who were blind in the story “The Odyssey”. Homer is know to have curly hair, a beard, and eyes that are gray (of a blind person) Both stories show of maps of Greek mythology

Climatic Events: When Odysseus is about to take his kingdom back from the suitors And When Odysseus The Kingdom: Odysseus reaches to were he is in Ithaca hiding as a beggar. Athena informs his son he is there and alive. Odysseus and his son have there meet. Penelope makes a bow challenge only her husband or a god can do. Odysseus, swine farmer, cow farmer, and son come up with a plan to fight 100 suitors. Odysseus’s son takes all the suitors weapons which leaves them empty handed. So Odysseus and 3 other people are about to take a hundred suitors down. Not to mention that they are all locked in a room with no weapons with an angry king who is in fact armed. How did this serve as a climatic change in the epic poem: This was one thing that they were building up into doing. Like the blind dead person told Odysseus ahead of time that it was going to happen. So the little things to get back home were leading to him having to save his kingdom before the suitors tear it apart. The climax helps infer that the main character has made it to his/her destination finally. This scene shows all epic traits too. Positive: Odysseus is going to get his kingdom back and save his wife and everyone else. Negative: Odysseus does not know if they are going to get the kingdom back to normal

SETTING: TROJAN WAR “What of my sailing, then, from Troy?”- Text Book What I learned from this setting is that Odysseus was a tad bit demanding, cunning, ungrateful, and a bad leader. Greedy Stubborn Intelligent Bloodthirsty

CHARACTER TRAITS: Epic hero traits of Odysseus: Cunning Strength Intelligent Daring Courage Odysseus: I learned that Odysseus is a powerful national hero to the Greeks. He cares for his people and his kingdom. Odysseus is strong and witty. He knows how to demand needed things and he is favored among the Greek gods. Actions: Through Odysseus’s actions you can tell that he is very strong and Daring. The things he does like strapping himself to a boat sail and listening to the sirens, poking out the cyclops eye, and Defying a god. Words: From Odysseus’s words you can tell that he means what he says. This is when his cunning and intelligence kick in. In such issues like Calypso island and “Nohbody”.

EXAMPLE OF A HERO: 1.Kept his people safe from suitors 2.Got back from a 20 year trip 3.Dealt with monsters and gods going at him 4.Defied Poseidon 5.And was still going on bravery 6.Out witted a cyclops 7.Enchanted and enchantress 8.Got away from Calypso 9.Lost six good men and still fought 10.Came back to save his kingdom from terror I would say all of Odysseus’s words and actions are hero like because, everything he did was epic. More than the average human/ hero would do and, how much he went through too.

CONFLICTS Odysseus and Poseidon: Odysseus Defied Poseidon so now the have bad blood. Since Odysseus didn’t give credit to Poseidon at the Trojan War, and took it all for himself Poseidon cursed Odysseus. Poseidon cursed Odysseus with never seeing his fatherland again, and Odysseus replied as in getting smart with the god. So Poseidon is over here trying to get Odysseus to be killed at sea and get stuck any where possible so he may not reach his father land. Penelope and Suitors: Penelope is over in Ithaca trying to keep safe distance away from these suitors. In which btws do not suit her at all. The suitors are constantly nagging and asking her to marry them. Penelope on which hand still has hope Odysseus will come back to Ithaca. The suitors are getting inpatient so Penelope infers when she is done with a quilt she will chose a suitor to be her husband/king of Ithaca.

WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT THE TWO CHARACTERS: Penelope: I learned she showed intelligence and loyalty to her husband. Odysseus: Showed that he is willing to do anything to get back home to Ithaca. Odysseus showed a sort of bravery to going out onto the sea. Instead of heeding Poseidon's warning. Poseidon: I learned that Poseidon is a sneaky, clever god who does not like when no credit is granted to him.

HISTORY OF THE STORY Culture of Greeks: They didn’t lie except when it was for a reason They treated guest right or believed they would be punished for not They asked who’s you dad, where you from, and what are you good at The Greeks: I learned that they had Greek Mythology with them They believed anyone could be a god in disguise. So with that they treated strangers, beggars, and foreigners good

CENTRAL THEME The theme of the odyssey is: Cunning over having strength Give credit to those who earn it Do not over go someone to be under graded later 1. “My name is Nohbdy: mother, father, and friends, everyone calls me Nohbdy.‘” OUTCOME: The cyclops said “'Nohbdy, Nohbdy's tricked me. Nohbdy's ruined me!‘” 2.He had to trick and use pretty words to get away from Calypso Its important to learn about “The Odyssey” Because, it teaches us different ways of grammar and Western Hospitality
