Drawing the Face Portraits and Self Portraits

Bellwork 1/5/16 Copy this quote in your sketchbook: “Every time I paint a portrait, I lose a friend.” -John Singer Sargent What is Sargent saying here? Write what you think this quote means next to it in your sketchbook.

What is a PORTRAIT? A visual representation of a person What did we draw yesterday? Today we will draw a portrait in a fun way!

YIKES! If you know the person you are drawing, the pressure to produce accuracy can be scary. Even the most experienced and well-known portrait artists are presented with challenges. Don’t feel alone. Drawing a portrait is intimidating! Consider these two quotes from one of the best prtrait painters of all time, John Singer Sargent... “Every time I paint a portrait, I lose a friend.” “A portrait is a painting in which something is wrong with the mouth.”

Round Robin Portraits After learning about proportions, we will be doing a group drawing. You will have several other students draw you and you will do the same for them. We will rotate around the room. Each time we rotate, you will get a new partner and add to the drawing that someone else has started. This will be fun!

A Simple Approach to the Face 1.The first step is to draw a circle to represent the cranium. 2.Next, a line can be drawn to determine the length of the face. For most faces, this line should be approximately double the length of the original circle. 3.Next, lines are drawn from the bottom of that line to the edges of the circle creating the face shape. This will create an upside down egg shape.

Generalized Locations of Facial Features 4.The "eye" line is in the middle of the face. (Your eyes aren't way up on your forehead, so resist the temptation to put them there.) 5.Five "eyes" make up the width of a typical human face. Obviously, people only have two eyes. The "five eyes" just helps determine the width of the face. 6.The "nose" line is found in the middle of the "eye" line and the bottom of the chin. 7.The "mouth" line is in the middle of the area between the "nose" line and the bottom of the chin. This line represents where the top lip meets the bottom lip.

Generalized Locations of Facial Features 8.The corners of the inside of the eyes generally line up with the edges of the nose. 9.The pupils of the eyes generally line up with the corners of the mouth. 10.The ears are usually found between the "eye" line and the "nose" line. *When drawing faces, use these standards to help you get your facial proportions correct. *Remember, you must look and study your subject. *While these standards apply to most of us, they do not apply to all of us.

Practice Drawing Portraits

The Proportions of the Head and Face Although the proportions of a head will vary from person to person and change slightly with age, there are some basic principles you can follow to improve your drawing. You can use these to check the general size, shape and position of features in your drawings. If you view a head from the front, its width is approximately two thirds of its height. You can draw a vertical and horizontal guideline in the oval to divide the face. You can draw two more guidelines on the bottom portion of the face.

THE MONA LISA

Mona Lisa Fast Facts Leonardo da Vinci Year c. 1503–1506, perhaps until c. 1517 Oil paint on poplar wood Oilpoplar Dimensions 77 cm × 53 cm (30 in × 21 in) Location: Musée du Louvre, Paris Location: Musée du LouvreParis It is known as "the best known, the most visited, the most written about, the most sung about, the most parodied work of art in the world” The painting, thought to be a portrait of Lisa Gherardini, the wife of Francesco del Giocondo, a wealthy merchant at the time.Lisa Gherardini

Da Vinci and the Mona Lisa Leonardo da Vinci was a genius of the renaissance period. His skills were legendary - painter, architect, engineer, mathematician and philosopher buthe is perhaps best known for his paintings especially that of the Mona Lisa. Concise Biography, History & Facts About the artist - Leonardo da Vinci Nationality - Italian Place of Birth - Vinci, Italy Lifespan - April 15, 1452 - May 2, 1519 Family - Son of Ser Piero di Antonio and Caterina Educated - Served as an apprentice to Andrea del Verrocchio The name of the subject of this painting was probably Mona Lisa del Gioconda. Mona Lisa was the wife of Francesco di Bartolommeo di Zanobi del Giocondo. Mona Lisa was believed to be 24 years old at the time her portrait was painted. Her smile has captured the imagination of people for centuries.

Decide for yourself… Da Vinci never sold the portrait and it has been suggested that the portrait of the Mona Lisa is in fact Leonardo's female version of himself.

Bellwork 1/8/16 Copy these terms in your sketchbook: craftsmanship – The act of working carefully and skillfully with your hands. negative spaces – The open spaces surrounding and sometimes within a line, shape, or form. subject matter – The main topic, theme, or image in a work of art.

The Proportions of the Head and Face These proportions will only work if we share the same eye level as the subject. They will become distorted if we view the head from above or below. Many artists start a portrait with the eyes as they are the focal point of any face. The following proportions should help you with their scale and position in relation to the other features. The eyes are situated approximately half way down the head. If you view a head from the front, the distance across the eye is similar to the distance between the eyes. The distance between the eyes is similar to the breadth of the nose.

VA Assignment #1 Objective: Create a accurate and realistic self portrait from a photo or mirror using proper proportions. Draw your face paying attention to the shape of your face and your unique features. Spend time editiing and working to make it accurate. Add sufficient detail and subtle shading to show the shadows and depth on the face. Add a unique background to fill the “negative space.”

How will this be graded? Rubric 30 points possible Technique. Student used guidelines to create a face with proper proportions. 30 points possible Technique. Student used a “selfie” or mirror to adjust the drawing to reflect their own facial features. 10 points possible Directions. Student wrote their name and the date, used a pencil and oriented their paper correctly. 20 points possible Space. Student activated negative space. They used all of the paper in an interesting or artistic way. 10 points possible Craftsmanship. The work is neat and reflects age appropriate artistic skill.
