2. What is a political party? Organized group with similar views on government and methods of how the government should be run

3. What was the first political party? The Federalist party led by Alexander Hamilton was the first original political party. Two party system began because some thought the Federalist were to powerful so the Democrat-Republican parties began named Thomas Jefferson as President. It was one party now known as the Democats

4. Whig to Republican Whig party opposed “big government” and finally in 1850 the Republican Party was formed and replaced the Whigs.

5. Other Parties: In 1992 Ross Perot got 19% vote and formed the Reform Party to challenge Democrats and Republicans. Ralph Nader formed the Green Party with 5% votes in 2000

6. Party Platforms Purpose, goal and philosophy for the future is the parties platform. Democratic Party-more liberal Republican Party-more conservative

7. Citizenship A member of a nation Two ways you become a citizen: – Birth – Naturalization (apply for it)

8. Voting Rights-protect people’s freedoms Responsibility-taking action Citizens protect rights and show responsibility by VOTING! Requirements to vote: -18 years old -be citizen -vote in county you live in
