1 The Road to the Revolution and Republic

2 Vocabulary  Debt – the amount of money a national government owes.  Delegate – a person who represents others.  Grievance – a complaint.  Revolution – the overthrow of a government by those who are governed  Republic – a nation or state in which people elect representatives to govern them.

3 Vocabulary  Popular Sovereignty – the source of governmental power lies with the people.  Limited Government – everyone, including all authority figures, must obey the laws.  Separation of Powers – the powers of government are separated between the executive, legislative and judicial branches.  Checks and Balances – the branches of government share powers with the other branches and can check each other’s powers.

4 Growing Tensions  Tensions between Texas and the Mexican government grew during the 1820s and 1830s  Some Texans believed that separation from Mexico was their only solution

5 Differences  New settlements resulted in change  Trade expanded and population grew  New Mexican officials put an end to land grants  Many people that owned land grants legitimately could not settle their land because people already lived on it

6 Fredonian Rebellion  1825  Haden Edwards came to East Texas as an Empresario  But a group of settlers already claimed his land

7 Fredonian Rebellion…cont.  Mexico sided with the settlers…not Edwards  Edwards led a group of Texans who then claimed independence from Mexico in Nacogdoches  Stephen F. Austin sided with ________ and _________the rebellion Mexico stopped

8 Mier y Teran Report  1828, because of the Fredonian Rebellion  General Manuel Mier y Teran was sent to inspect Texas  Found that Anglo-Americans outnumbered Mexicans 10 to 1 in North and East Texas

9 Law of April 6, 1830  After the Mier y Teran report  Mexico stopped immigration from the US into Texas  Set up new presidios (forts)  Discouraged trade

10 Arrest of Stephen F. Austin  January 1834  SFA was arrested after writing a letter to Texas telling them to create their own government
