2. Vocabulary  Debt – the amount of money a national government owes.  Delegate – a person who represents others.  Grievance – a complaint.  Revolution – the overthrow of a government by those who are governed  Republic – a nation or state in which people elect representatives to govern them.

3. Vocabulary  Popular Sovereignty – the source of governmental power lies with the people.  Limited Government – everyone, including all authority figures, must obey the laws.  Separation of Powers – the powers of government are separated between the executive, legislative and judicial branches.  Checks and Balances – the branches of government share powers with the other branches and can check each other’s powers.

4. Growing Tensions  Tensions between Texas and the Mexican government grew during the 1820s and 1830s  Some Texans believed that separation from Mexico was their only solution

9. Law of April 6, 1830  After the Mier y Teran report  Mexico stopped immigration from the US into Texas  Set up new presidios (forts)  Discouraged trade

10. Arrest of Stephen F. Austin  January 1834  SFA was arrested after writing a letter to Texas telling them to create their own government
