All Anglo-American immigrants to Texas had to become Mexican citizens. Must follow Mexican laws. Must practice the Catholic religion. Must learn to speak Spanish. NONE were popular among Anglo-American settlers.

The Edwards Brothers tried to push out Tejano families already living around Nacogdoches to start a new colony. Mexico sided with the Tejano families. The Edwards brothers took over Nacogdoches and claimed it as an independent country called Fredonia. Mexico put an end to the rebellion but began to worry that other settlers might want to try to split from Mexico. Haden Edwards

Mexico sent General Manuel de Mier y Teran to Texas to learn more about it. He noticed that Anglos-American settlers outnumbered Tejanos. He feared Mexico might lose control of Texas. He told leaders to invite more Mexican and European settlers to Texas. He also thought more soldiers should be sent to Texas.

– Mexico passed the law of April 6, 1830 in response to the Mier y Teran report. There was to be no more immigration from the United States into Texas. Slavery was outlawed in Texas. Settlers had to pay taxes on goods brought from the United States. Mexican troops were sent to Texas to enforce laws.

Santa Anna led a rebellion in the towns of Anahuac and Velasco. Santa Anna rises to power by overthrowing the Mexican government. Santa Anna becomes the new president of Mexico in 1833. Santa Anna later creates a Centralist government where he rules as dictator and has all the power.

Anglo settlers wrote a petition to the new Mexican government asking that they allow Anglo-American immigrants to settle in Texas. Also, to allow Texas to become a separate state from Coahuila. Santa Anna never responded. Austin wrote to the settlers and told them to start a new state government without Mexico’s permission. Near the end of 1833, Santa Anna finally responds by agreeing with the settlers requests. Santa Anna learns of Austin’s letter and has him arrested for working against the Mexican government.

Various tensions between Anglo-American settlers and the Mexican government were the initial events that led to the Texas Revolution. Texas declares independence from Mexico on March 2, 1836. Delegates from the Convention of 1836 write the Texas Declaration of Independence, Texas Constitution and the Texas Bill of Rights giving birth to a new nation.
