5  Body Size- A smaller person feels the effect of the same amount of alcohol faster than a larger person  Gender- Alcohol generally moves into the bloodstream faster in females than in males, because females tend to have smaller bodies than males  Food- Food in the stomach slows down the passage of alcohol into the bloodstream

6  Rate of intake- If a person drinks alcohol faster than the liver can break it down, the person becomes intoxicated.  Amount- As the amount of alcohol consumed increases, the level of alcohol in the bloodstream rises.  Medicine- Alcohol can interfere with the effects of medicines, and medicines can heighten the effects of alcohol.

7  Alcohol poisoning is an overdose to alcohol which can lead to the following symptoms:  Mental confusion  Coma and an inability to be roused  Vomiting and seizures  Slow respiration-ten seconds between breaths or fewer than eight breaths per minute  Irregular heartbeat  Hypothermia or low body temperature-pale or bluish skin color

8  In pairs write down as many reasons why people might drink.  Decide on two reasons to share with the rest of the class. Write it down on post-its and stick it on the board 2 minutes
