Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.3 Let’s review what we did in the last session FRACTION : A number that names part of a whole or part of a group. ¼ FRACTION DENOMINATOR NUMERATOR DENOMINATOR: It is the number below the bar in a fraction. The denominator represents the total number of equal parts in the whole or the set. NUMERATOR: It is the number above the bar in a fraction. The numerator represents how many pieces of the whole that are being discussed.

So, this part will be denoted by the fraction 5 6 This is 1 part of 6 parts of the Hexagon. So, this part will be denoted by the fraction 1 6 Review

Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.5 A fraction is part of an entire object Two fourths are yellow. One half is yellow. One fourth is yellow. Three fourths are yellow. Four fourths are yellow. Review

Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.6 Types of Fraction PROPER FRACTION - fraction with the lowest of the two numbers on the top. Example:-4949 IMPROPER FRACTION - fraction with the highest of the two numbers on the top. Example:-5353 MIXED FRACTION – It is a fraction named by a whole number and a fraction. Example:-4949 5 Review

Add to Identify: Number of Stars or Triangles = 5 Total number of shapes = 9 Of all the shapes, 5 are Stars or Triangle. 9 Review

Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.9 Write a fraction to show how many shapes are not Stars or Triangle. 9 shapes - 3 stars - 2 triangles = 4 other shapes. Subtract to Identify: Number not Stars or Triangles = 4 Total number of shapes = 9 Of all the shapes, 4 are Stars or Triangle. 9 Review

Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.10 Let’s start now with Equivalent fractions & simplest form Equivalent fractions: It is two or more fractions that name the same number. For example, 2 = 4 3 6 When the numerator and denominator are both multiplied by 2, the result is 4 6, which has the same value as 2 3. Equivalent Fraction.

Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.11 Use Fraction models to find the Equivalent Fraction Equivalent Fraction for 6 12 Fraction piece used Number of pieces Equivalent Fraction 1818 44848 1616 33636 1414 22424 Line up the fraction models. Then count the number of pieces for each model that equal the length of 6 12 6 12 1818 1616 1414

Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.12 Use paper and pencil to find the Equivalent Fraction Multiplying the numerator and denominator of a fraction by the same (non-zero) number results in a new fraction that is said to be Equivalent to the original fraction. i.e., The word Equivalent means that the two fractions have the same value.

Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.13 1 = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and so on. 1 2 3 4 5 So, 1 x 6 = 6 2 6 12 2 x 3 = 6 4 3 12 3 x 2 = 6 6 2 12 You can multiply by 1 without changing the value of the fraction. Here fractions 1, 2, and 3 are Equivalent Fractions 2 4 6 because they have the same value.

Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.14 Hence we see that, fraction in Lowest terms/Simplest Form is a fraction that has been reduced,or divided so far that the numerator and the denominator do not share factors any longer. SIMPLEST FORM: A fraction is in simplest form if 1 is the only common factor of the numerator and denominator. Fraction in Lowest terms/Simplest Form For example, 2 is the simplest form of 12. 318

Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.15 Find the Simplest form of 4 12 STEP 1: Find the common factors. Factors of 4: 1, 2, 4 Factors of 12: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12 Common factors of : 2, 4 In order to reduce a fraction to its lowest terms, you can divide the fraction by any common factor, and continue until it's in lowest terms, or they can divide by the greatest common factor.

Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.16 STEP 1: Divide numerator and the denominator by the greatest common factor. 4 ÷ 4 = 1 12 4 3 Divide by 4 = 1 to simplify. 4 So, the value of the fraction doesn’t change.
