4. Word Plays New words Read over the Key Terms and practice the pronunciation. Find a word that interests you. Pick a Partner Decide who is A and who is B. Each partner reads the word and definition aloud to their partner. B goes first. Verbal vignettes Each team of two will write a short scene that uses their two words as inspiration. Your scene should address the meaning of the words or demonstrate the concepts without actually naming them. The scene must have a clear beginning, middle and end - about 1 page long. After the scene is written, rehearse your scene at least twice. Share out

5. The 5 P’s of Poverty Why are some countries rich and other countries poor? Place (Location of the country, weather, neighbors, etc.) Past (Things they cannot change) People (Demographics; age, education, literacy, race, etc.) Peace (Is there a long history of conflict) Politics (do they have a functional government? Corruption? Democracy?

6. The 5 P’s of Poverty What additional barriers do people in poverty face in poor countries? How is it different to be poor in a poor country that poor in a rich country? Take for example, a woman in sub-Saharan Africa who is trying to support her family by weaving baskets. Without access to clean water, she will likely spend a good part of her day finding and fetching clean water, hours that she is not able to spend working on her business. Poor roads make this task even more time-consuming and also mean that she cannot reach larger markets for her goods, and is thus relegated to only selling to other poor people. No electricity means she can only work, and her children can only study, during daylight hours. Poor access to quality education means she will be unable to successfully negotiate contracts and tasks necessary for the growth of her business. Lack of sanitation facilities contribute to diseases, that, along with Malaria and TB, mean she is often ill, and her children are frequently sickened and needing her care – again, making it impossible for her to work. Lack of quality health care facilities only exacerbates this dynamic. A dearth of government and diplomatic institutions means there is often insecurity and armed conflict in her country with the potential to put her completely out of business – due to destruction, displacement, disability, and even death.

7. The 5 P’s of Poverty: Debrief What P’s did you hear in the story? How can the 5P framework help you all become better global citizens? Keep the 5P framework in your journal. It will be a great reference as you learn more about the country you will visit this summer.

8. What does aid look like? How would you define it? Brainstorm (on the board) all the different ways people can help each other. How can countries help other countries? Examine our list on the board and consider the benefits and drawbacks of each type of aid. Do any seem overtly negative? Overtly positive? Which ones could be both positive and negative? How so? Which ones are band-aids (emergency relief) and which ones are aimed at long term solutions? Is one better than the other?

9. Too much of a good thing? The purpose of this activity is to introduce students to the concept of unintended consequences, and how sometimes aid actually exacerbates problems. It also stresses the importance of long term solutions as opposed to quick fixes. Read “With Cheap Food Imports, Haiti Cannot Feed Itself” After reading, share any questions you have about the article. How has aid impacted Haiti? Are there other forms of aid that would have been more helpful to the people of Haiti in the long term? Think about our discussion of globalization - how has Haiti been impacted by globalization?

10. Reflection How were the 3 Cs of courage, commitment, and compassion exemplified in what you learned about today or in your extension activity from last workshop? How did others in your group demonstrate one or all of the 3 Cs today? Please reflect on your own 3Cs since our last workshop. Which do you feel you demonstrated the most? Provide a specific example. Which do you need to work on and how will you work on it?

11. Extension Find an organization that is working in Nicaragua, Ecuador, or the Dominican Republic. What is their mission? What problem are they trying to solve? How are they attempting to solve it? Are they having any success? What type of leadership is this organization demonstrating?
