1 Delivering effective tobacco education in schools Bianca Crosling, Quit Victoria Fiona Edwards, Smarter than Smoking Project, WA

2 Aims of ANYPAT  to contribute to the reduction of smoking amongst young people by collaborating on initiatives, and sharing knowledge, expertise, information and resources among State and Territory organisations  to implement a collaborative, comprehensive and consistent approach to National Youth Tobacco Free Day and The Critics’ Choice

4 The Critics’ Choice Background  project developed in British Columbia, Canada in 1998  permission gained to develop an Australian version  first run in Australia in 2000 in Victoria, SA and Tasmania  in 2007 The Critics’ Choice was run in ACT, NSW, Queensland, SA, Tasmania, WA and Victoria.

5 State/Territory organisations that run The Critics’ Choice  The Cancer Council ACT  The Cancer Council Queensland  NSW Department of Education  Quit Tasmania  Quit Victoria  Smarter than Smoking SA (Quit SA)  Smarter than Smoking WA

6 Aims  to discourage young people from experimenting with tobacco  to prompt young people who smoke to quit  to encourage students to watch, discuss and critique anti-smoking TV advertisements  to expose students to a range of advertisements that they have not previously seen  to gain insight into the effectiveness of different types of advertisements as perceived by Australian students

7 The Critics’ Choice DVD  compile of 12 anti-smoking advertisements from all over the world  Teacher Resource (in PDF format) which includes: - How to run The Critics’ Choice - 2 additional lesson plans that focus on developing critical literacy skills - Teacher evaluation form - Student grading sheet - Background information on smoking in Australia

8 Distribution  The Critics’ Choice is suitable for upper primary and secondary school students  registration and distribution varies between States and Territories -distribute to every school within State/Territory -invite schools to register to receive DVD

9 Running the activity  teacher screens 12 anti-smoking advertisements to class  students rate each advertisement (on a scale of 1 to 5)  students nominate an overall winner and record why it is the winner  teacher facilitates a classroom discussion  teacher returns results and evaluation back to organisation

14 Evaluation findings  The Critics’ Choice is mostly run within Health Ed, Personal Development or PE  over 95% of schools reported that The Critics’ Choice was consistent with their school’s Drug Education curriculum  most common responses to what teachers liked most about The Critics’ Choice: - the variety of advertisements in the compile - students are highly engaged in the activity - the Teacher Resource is easy to use

15 Evaluation findings  over 65% of respondents reported they would not change anything about The Critics’ Choice  more common suggestions for improvement: - more Australian advertisements - more advertisements with graphic images  100% of responses reported they would like to participate in The Critics’ Choice the following year

16 Looking to the future  12 new advertisements already secured for 2008  ads from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, UK and USA (Vermont, Virginia and Washington State)  5 ads from Australia  recruit other groups/orgs that have a youth focus  increased awareness about accessing Teacher Resource on the DVD
