3 Drug Unit S.O.L’s 9.1The student will apply health knowledge and skills to the development and analysis of personal goals to achieve and maintain long-term health and wellness. Key concepts/skills include c) development of personal standards regarding the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other harmful substances; f) establishment of personal parameters for appropriate and inappropriate health behaviors; 9.3The student will analyze, synthesize, and evaluate the relationships among positive health behaviors, prevention and treatment of injury, and premature death. Key concepts/skills include c) identification of situations involving risks; e) the effects of alcohol and other drug use.

4 Drug Unit S.O.L’s 9.4The student will use various sources of information to evaluate global health issues. Key concepts/skills include b) the benefits of information provided by recognized sources, such as state and local health departments, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the American Dietetic Association (ADA), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). 9.5 The student will evaluate the benefits of collaboration in relation to community health and wellness initiatives. Key concepts/skills include a) the impact of developing positive relationships among health, wellness, and safety professionals for promotion of healthy communities; c) development of school and community health programs for citizens of all ages; d) the need for community services; e) the awareness of health-related social issues such as organ donation, homelessness, underage drinking, and substance abuse.

5 Steroids  “Steroids” refers to the classification of the drug.  There are good and bad steroids

6 Good Steroids  Doctor prescribed increased muscle tissue for cancer patients. Could “jump start” the testosterone process in delayed puberty

7 Good Steroids  Corticosteroids - creams and ointments, usually for controlling rashes and itching.  Estrogens- relates to female sex hormones (ex. Birth control).  Steroids produced by the FDA are legal.

8 Steroids  Anabolic-androgenic steroids are man-made substances related to male sex hormones (testosterone).  “Anabolic” refers to muscle-building.  “Androgenic” refers to increased masculine characteristics.

9 Bad Steroids  Androgens - steroids used for growth and development of muscle tissue and mass.

10 How Steroids are taken:  Injected intramuscularly, which the user uses a needle to insert the steroid directly into the muscle group being worked.

11 How Steroids are taken:  Orally, where the user takes a pill and lets it distribute itself, after broken down by the body, to all muscle areas.

12 How Steroids are taken:  Creams, which are rubbed into the skin at particular areas where the user wants to work out.

13 Steroids  Steroids are also illegally diverted from U.S. pharmacies or synthesized in labs.  Distribution without a medical license is illegal.

14 Steroids  Often sold at gyms, competitions, and through trainers  It’s easy to smuggle because they’re not illegal in most countries. Ex: Mexico and Greece

15 Steroid Effects  Breast development in men, decrease in women.  Irritability and aggression (ROID RAGE)

16 Steroid Effects  Acne  Adolescent use may cause a premature stop in lengthening bones (Stunted growth)  Mood swings (extremes)  HIV

18 Use of Steroids  Cycling - taking multiple doses of steroids over a specific period of time, stopping for a period, then starting over.  Stacking - combining several different types of steroids.  Pyramiding - users slowly escalate, or build up, the number of drugs used at one time. The dose and/or frequency may be elevated too. The user will reach a peak amount, then gradually taper the dose toward the end of the cycle.

19 Who Uses Steroids?  Athletes: Endurance Strength Quick Power  Weight training  Anyone else interested in building or defining muscles.
