4. Why is it Important to Nurses? Patient Safety “Intimidating and disruptive behaviors can foster medical errors, contribute to poor patient satisfaction and to preventable adverse outcomes, increase the cost of care, and cause qualified clinicians, administrators and managers to seek new positions in more professional environments.” (The Joint Commission)

5. Why is it Important to Nurses? Healthy Work Environment Civility affects the quality and quantity of our hard work and creates a healthy work environment, healthy staff, and increased productivity.

6. Why is it Important to Nurses? In 2011 in Medscape the second most read article was Nurses: Resetting the Civility Conversation In 2000, more than700 nurses told the Maryland Commission on the Crisis in Nursing that civility was one of their top three workplace concerns.

9. Johns Hopkins University As stated in the Christian Science Monitor written by Richard O’Mara, Johns Hopkins Civility Project makes peace person to person, then nation to nation. Also, Piero Massimo Forni sees being considerate to one another as the foundation for everything from the environmental movement to women's rights.

California State University San Marcos Defines Civility as: “Conducting oneself with care, respect, and empathy while acknowledging the culture and humanity of others.” Pledge: “As a member of the CSUSM community I will conduct myself with care, respect, and empathy while acknowledging the culture and humanity of others.”

Treatment of others with dignity, and behaviors which promote a physically and psychologically safe, secure, and supportive climate. 12. Rutgers University Project Civility Hypothesis: Can a two year intentional, community wide didactic encourage small acts of courtesy and compassion? Year 1 Goal: Add vocabulary and deep discussion on all aspects of civility. Year 2 Goal: Encourage community service and emphasize environmental responsibility, and global citizenship.
