1 Smallpox By: Austin Gerovac, Caitlin Bissen, Dana Milhouse, and Maeve Shaeffer.

2 The Ancient Civilizations ●The Aztec, Maya, and Inca lived in Mexico, Central America, and the Andes Mountains. ●They were brilliant inventors that invented much we use today. (hot chocolate, calendars, and bubble gum etc.) ●Contracted many diseases from the Spanish. ●Contracted smallpox from dead Spanish man.

3 What is Smallpox? It is a disease that that gives you bumps all over your body and spreads quickly Can be fatal Lasts up to about 3 weeks It is past through interacting with people, for example sharing water, shaking someones hand, or coughing Viral disease Caused by the variola virus

4 Integumentary system Your skin, hair, nails, exocrine glands. (Your skin is only part that’s affected.)

5 Circulatory System The Circulatory System pumps blood throughout your body and gives you energy and nutrients The Circulatory System includes- *Heart *Blood Vessels *Veins Smallpox is a virus and is spread through your blood and pumps through your heart.

6 Immune system Immune system- Bone marrow, thymus, and lymphoid tissue. (It kills the macrophages, defensive cells within the body.)

7 Digestive System Digestive systems-Stomach, mouth, esophagus, small intestine, large intestine. (Stomach is affected by nausea, mouth and esophagus are affected by sores.)

8 Side effects/ What does it do? Rash Coughing Vomiting Flu symptoms Red sores in your mouth Yellow/pale skin Flu symptoms

9 Treatments (Vaccine) There isn’t really a treatment but there is a vaccination Vaccine has many side effects Common-Feeling unusually cold, shivering, swollen, painful, or tender lymph glands in the neck or armpit Less Common-Itching, headache, fever and chills More Common- Having trouble moving, nausea, swollen joints Vaccine invented in 1949 by Edward Jenner

11 “Fun” Facts (Not really that fun) It spreads slower that measles or chickenpox It is very rare today Teens and young adults have more of a chance to catch it There is a 30% chance you will survive ●Smallpox was eradicated in the 1940’s

12 How Does the Past Influence the Present ●Because we have had this disease for so long we have developed a vaccine ●We know the disease before it develops badly ●If someone has the disease we can save them with new medical equipment developed over the years ●If all those people didn’t die history probably would be different because they would have contributed different things
