1 Protestant Reformation Teacher’s Edition Unit One – Renaissance and Reformation

2 Today’s Main Idea: As ideas of the Renaissance spread it caused people to question previously held beliefs. New inventions helped to spread the ideas of the protestant reformation.

3 Protestant Reformation Protestant Reformation – a religious movement in the 1500s that split the Christian church in western Europe and led to the establishment of a number of new churches

4 Reasons for the Reformation: The Catholic Church was very wealthy and some believed that the Church had strayed from its religious purpose. The Church had become financially corrupt and much of the tax money was paid by lower class people. The selling of indulgences

5 Indulgences Indulgences – pardons issued by the pope of the Roman Catholic Church that could reduce a soul’s time in purgatory, this led to corruption

6 Martin Luther: –German monk whose protests against the Catholic Church in 1517 (the 95 Theses) led to calls for reform –These reforms became known as the Reformation

7 Martin Luther’s Beliefs: Ninety Five Theses –Denied the power of indulgences –It was intended to be read by church officials –They were posted on the Church doors ( used like old fashion community bulletin boards) –The printing press helped spread his ideas throughout Europe

8 Luther’s Message: –Contradicted Catholic doctrine –All one needs is faith for salvation –Jesus is the only head of the church, not the pope –Translated the bible to German, thought one should interpret bible for themselves

9 Reaction to Luther –He was excommunicated (kicked out of the church) –Edict (Diet) of Worms – made Luther an outlaw –Unintentionally created the Lutheran church

10 Renaissance and the Reformation: The focus on humanism and secularism allowed individuals to question the Catholic Church –Ex: Thomas Moore The Catholic Church used its wealth and power to employ many of the great artist of the Renaissance

11 Johannes Guttenberg invented the movable type printing press (before the only way to type a book was hand writing) 1 st published the bible How do you think this helped to spread the ideas of the reformation? Guttenberg first printed the bible in German – this allowed people to interpret the bible themselves –This was against Catholic teachings The Printing Press & The Protestant Reformation:
