2 Stalin Takes Power When Lenin died in 1924, Joseph Stalin took power. He led the USSR through World War II and died in 1953. By 1928, established himself as absolute dictator.

3 Totalitarian State Stalin turned the Soviet Union into a totalitarian state. Totalitarian state- a government that strictly controls all aspects of life by force. – The party used propaganda. – The Communists replaced religion with their own ideology.
